dry fly leader A dry fly leader is simply a short section of line tied between your fly and hook. It allows you to cast more accurately while fishing dry flies and provides more flexibility, allowing you to bend it over and release slack in order to impart movement on your fly during casting. When tied correctly, it also keeps your flies dryer than if they were tied directly onto your tippet.

A leader made for nymphing would have three or four times as much breaking strength as a standard leader because it’s designed for casting large weighted flies against the wind or across current the mono rig falls into that category.
