What do you hear now?
A friend who had lived only in the countryside all his life went out to meet a friend who lives in Seoul. The noise of cars, the noise of many people coming and going, and the chaos of the city were enough to distract you. A country friend walking down a busy street with her friend suddenly stopped him and asked his friend.
“Wait a minute, can you hear that?”
I looked at my city friend and asked what he could hear. A country friend said he could hear crickets. The city friend shook his head and said. “You must have heard it wrong, what kind of crickets are there in this city? If there is, how can you hear it?”
But the country friend looked around. She listened and carefully walked a few steps and overturned an ivy climbing up a building. A cricket was crying right there. A friend of the city who was watching it said.
“It’s very interesting that you hear crickets, and you seem to have much brighter ears than we who live in the countryside, too, live in the city.”
Then the country friend tossed a 500 won coin from his pocket onto the road. When there was a clattering sound of coins falling, passersby looked towards the sound. A country friend said as he picked up a coin.
“You must have known that in a noisy city center, the sound of a 500-won coin falling is no louder than the sound of a cricket. And yet people heard the sound of coins falling and turned around. On the other hand, I was the only one who heard the sound of crickets. It's not because I'm more deaf than the people in the city, but because people are much better at hearing what they care about!"
People 100 percent agree with the statement that people are supposed to hear better what they care about. There is one thing that mothers who have given birth and raised babies can relate. After putting the baby to sleep, while doing other things or talking to other people, he clearly understands the baby's cry better than other people. Surprisingly, even if the sound is so small that other people cannot hear it at all, the baby's mother can hear the baby's sound louder and clearer than any other sound in the world.
If the sounds I hear are a product of my interest, it would be beneficial to look at what sounds I am listening to. If possible, I wish I could hear the sound of crickets better than the sound of coins in the middle of the city.
