On our video conference for the subject SSE 9, on the 4th week of September year 2020. The first group reported about “Culture”. According to their discussion, culture pertains to the knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, law, customs, norms and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of the society.

Culture has two types. "Material Culture”, which refers to the things that we create and use. Such as equipment, clothing, weapons, buildings and other significant objects. The other type is “Non Material Culture”, which refers to intangible ones. Such as the word we speak. It could also refer to the law that we follow. The practices and traditions we do. Even our beliefs and behaviors could belong to “Non Material Culture”. Moreover I had learned that culture can be shared, learned and acquired. Based on my own understanding about the reporting. Even though we are born with a culture acquired from our parents and the surrounding we had grown-up. When we move from another place with a different culture, their culture can be transmitted to us. That is when culture becomes cumulative, due to the new culture that we learned as we grow and interact with others. Culture is also a factor that makes us unique from other people. For example our Higaonon brothers and sisters from the highlands of Bukidnon has a distinct culture. Which makes them different from the other ethnic groups in the Philippines. Last of all, culture brings people together. For example we Filipinos are known to be family oriented. When special occasions takes place, such as Christmas and New Year. We seek to it that we are together with our other family members to celebrate these very special holidays.

From a perspective of a social studies student, we should study this matter well. For it contains many interesting things and lessons that might aid us towards understand our selves and other people as well. Culture is a matter that we should not take lightly, for it is the absence of awareness towards culture that fosters discrimination. Soon as we start teaching, let us teach our students well about culture. In these way we are helping our society raise individuals that embraces diversity and holds the outmost awareness towards culture.
