Many people work for long hours, leaving them very little time for leisure. Does this situation have more advantages or disadvantages?
It is usual to see people indulging in work for longer than normal duration of time, which ultimately leaves them with little or no time for recreation. Although working continuously may benefit the company’s reputation and widens the horizons for the worker’s well-deserved promotion, it causes them various stress-related health issues and affects their family relationships. In my opinion, it is essential to restrict the number of working hours, despite the positive outcomes that they bring about.
The greatest benefit for an employee who works long hours is that they have superior chances of getting rewarded in return. Not only do they get it in the form of promotion of their rank, but also as numerous monetary remunerations. Furthermore, their daily tasks at work are achieved at a faster pace as a result of working continuously. This results in their targets getting attained sooner, ultimately causing benefit to their company’s prestige. For example, according to a recent survey by the Chief executive officers of numerous reputed brands in the US, they favour those companies whose staff prefers working for a greater number of hours. Therefore, if personnel works overtime, not only will it benefit the individual employee but will also provide an added advantage to the company.
Conversely, engaging in work for longer periods is not without its drawbacks, however. It may expose the worker to various health issues. Sitting for longer than normal durations may cause them physical problems, and the continuous work-related stress may instil nervous tension and anxiety in them. To illustrate, two-thirds of the employees in the UK reported chronic back pain as a result of working for prolonged durations. Additionally, family bonding is adversely affected. The employees have very little time left to enjoy with their families which may result in domestic conflicts. Hence, working for continuously long periods can cause issues pertaining to both their health and family ties.
In conclusion, individuals who work overtime have no free time for other purposes. Despite bringing esteem to company and rewards to themselves, it is a root cause of ill-health and dysfunctional family relations. In my belief, although superfluously long working hours can impose a positive outcome on a brand’s image as a whole, it is absolutely imperative to deter them.
