Giving pocket-money to children and adolescents has become common throughout the world. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your opinion.
It is not unusual to see children getting pocket-money all over the globe. Although this does reinforce their spending habits in the long run, some of them may take undue advantage of the money given and misuse it for interests that are deleterious to them. In my opinion, children and youngsters should be given this allowance weekly or monthly, despite some of the drawbacks that it will inevitably cause.
The greatest benefit of giving pocket money to children is that it infuses in them a sense of responsibility. They discern that they have been trusted with some amount of hard-earned money, and thereby try to spend it more prudently. Children who get pocket-money, for instance, grow up to have better value for money and have superior spending habits than those who do not. Moreover, it aids them in meeting their fundamental necessities. Since they do not have any other means of earning, they are totally reliant on it for the essential commodities that they may need. Therefore, inculcation of a feeling of dutifulness and aiding them in meeting their monthly expenses are the main advantages of getting some fixed allowance by the children.
Conversely, giving pocket-money is not without its negatives, however. They make take unwarranted advantage of it, thereby using it for detrimental gains. For instance, cases have been reported, where the adolescents have used this allowance for the purchase of narcotics. Additionally, they may begin to take money for granted. As a result, they become spoilt and pampered, owing to the habit of getting easy money. Therefore, not only does pocket-money provide a means of fulfilling their harmful desires, but also makes them inconsiderate and egoistic.
To conclude, giving pocket-money has become incredibly widespread globally. Despite making them feel dutiful and assisting them financially, it may become a great means of achieving selfish motives and makes them spoilt, thereupon inflicting harm upon them in long-run. In my belief, owing to instilling a sense of maturity and responsibility, I opine that the advantages of giving monthly pocket-money to children supercede its disadvantage.
