Most people rely on smartphone apps to pass the time, but your iPhone or Android definitely weren't built for gaming. These handheld game consoles are, and they are a great distraction. They have better battery life, actual buttons, and tons of games that can keep you occupied for hours. With four portable video game consoles on its roster, Nintendo is dominating the handheld space. Here are all the best handheld game consoles that are worth considering to keep you entertained on the go.

Nintendo Switch

SHOP NOW

Editor's Note: The Nintendo Switch is currently experiencing supply shortages on Amazon, so check to see if it is in stock at B&H, GameStopTarget, or Walmart. You may be able to find the Animal CrossingEdition if you can't find the standard colors for purchase.

This console features a unique design that allows it to seamlessly transform from a mobile gaming device to a home game system. When you place the Switch in its dock, it automatically switches to allow gaming on the big screen.

The Switch offers entertainment in any environment, thanks to its portability and wide library of games. You can even kick back and watch Hulu on it! The console offers an extensive set of accessories as well as 5 hours of battery life, and it's available in several different color configurations. If you want to game on the go, you can't go wrong with a Switch. We won't travel without it!

Nintendo Switch Lite

Editor's Note: The Nintendo Switch Lite is currently experiencing supply shortages on Amazon, so check to see if it is in stock at B&H, GameStopTarget, or Walmart. The Coral Switch Lite is the newest color, so we think you'll have the best luck finding that model in stock.

The Nintendo Switch Lite's lightweight design and compact 5.5-inch display make it a bit more portable than the standard Switch. Priced at just $200, it’s cheaper, too! You can order the Lite in several eye-catching colors: yellow, turquoise, and gray.

Because its Joy-Cons cannot detach from its body, the console feels much more robust, sturdy, and durable than the regular Switch. The Switch Lite can't be docked to play games on the big screen, though, so if you game on the go instead of at home, the Switch Lite is the better option.

GPD XD Plus Portable Gaming Handheld

An emulator is hardware or software that lets one device behave like another. The GPD XD Plus allows you to play classic games from old consoles like the NES, SNES, PS1, or Game Boy. It's not as simple as just firing up an App Store to download the games, though.

If you're good with computers and researching things online, the GPD XD Plus is one of the best emulators you can buy — it's one of the few that's powerful and portable.

But we don't recommend it for people who dislike tweaking gadgets or following tutorials online, since you have to jump through some hoops to install ROMs (games) on the device.

Nintendo 2DS (Refurbished) Handheld Game Console

Editor's Note: The Nintendo 2DS is currently experiencing supply shortages. Nintendo still sells refurbished units in both color configurations that are backed by a warranty on eBay, so check to see if it is in stock at Walmart if you'd prefer a new model.

The Nintendo 2DS is basically a 3DS without its hinges. It sports a wedge shape instead of the original clamshell design, but it's still comfortable to hold. Its two backlit screens are bright but are left exposed — which makes them prone to cracks and scratches.

The device plays Nintendo's extensive library of Nintendo DS and 3DS games. But it doesn't support stereo sound unless you're wearing headphones. This console definitely looks more like a toy than a serious gaming machine, making it a great device for kids to play with.

There are three variants of the 2DS. The scarlet red and electric blue versions come with the game New Super Mario Bros. 2, while the yellow and red variant comes with Super Mario Maker.
