Telcos in the Philippines

The telecommunications industry in the Philippines is a locally dominated sector in the country. The exclusivity of local market players providing fixed-line and broadband connections like Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) and Globe Telecom operating across the country gives them an advantage in terms of revenue. For example, the majority of the installed telephone lines in 2014 across the country were provided by PLDT, and other telephone operators share only a small amount in the installation.

Options for mobile cell phone subscriptions rely upon major mobile network service providers like Smart-PLDT and Globe, and recently a new market player has been introduced in the country which is called NOW Telecom. NOW Telecom that is going to be the fourth Telecommunication company intends to invest in fiber optic cable networks that would be rented out to other Telco companies and internet service providers. If the project would be successful, the company can reach more consumers with a faster service.

The most common market strategy among mobile network providers in the Philippines is to supply the mobile phone device together with a broadband connection paid by a fixed subscription, and this attracts consumers since the subscription is to be paid monthly. However, much should still be done by telecommunication companies in the Philippines to be able to provide a wider connection of broadbandconnection service. The share of broadband speedsabove 100 Mbps in the Philippines was only one percent compared to other countries across the APAC region, which means broadband connection speed of below 100 Mbps in the country is about 99 percent. The slowest across the region.
