Myths We Thought were Facts (Number 4 will Surprise You)
Ever since we were kids, parents or older people used to tell us to do different things like don't leave your feet uncovered since there's a monster underneath your bed and other more stuff. Those things leave us unbothered since we were really scared of what will happen as they said it would be. But have you ever wondered if those things are actually facts or just a saying most people do?
Here are 7 Myths that we thought were Facts:
You need to drink 8 glasses of water a day
This saying or idea to stay hydrated is a rule of thumb only. Though I can't say that it's not really true because of some reason. One reason is that we need to take enough water to replace the amount that we lose each day. This might come along with your bodily functions, age, and if ever you have other kinds of treatment. Some research says that this thought was from medical research years ago where most people, especially those who have aged already, to avoid getting dehydrated. Actually, for me, I don't really drink to much water but I really have to since I have medical conditions I need to take action.
Bats are blind
Bats are not actually blind. Maybe this thought came from people that had a hard time finding the eyes of bats since they are really small. And maybe because of the reason that these creatures use sound for them to go places. According to science, bats produce sound whenever they bounce and this helps them to navigate where they want to be. It means that their sense of sound is more active rather than their eyesight.
Shaving makes the hair grow thicker
This is probably the most unbelievable thing to be called as a myth. This idea came from clinical issues in 1928 which made the conclusion that shaving can lead to thicker hair. Maybe some people who have experienced it have seen how their hair grow thick, no matter which part of their body was shaved. This is actually not true. The regrowing of hair is not due to shaving. Most probably, you might just believe in it since the new hair happens to appear different from the previous ones. Shaving doesn't mean removing. Unlike plucking hair, shaving is just cutting the hair so it will be seen as nonexistent.
We only have 5 senses
Traditionally, yes, we do have 5 senses. Actually, we have 20 other senses. These other senses include vibration, pain, hunger, time, movement, and proprioception. I admit I didn't know this one until I read through an Instagram post. Senses, as you know, are sensors which means that we have this because it gives us the information we need from the world. As mentioned from the other senses, pain is also called Nociception. Pain is the kind of sense where we experience or feel some kind of physiological pain within our body. It is also the one who reminds us with certain thoughts like to never touch fire as it will hurt or burn you.
You shouldn't wake a sleepwalker
Probably it is not really advisable to wake a sleepwalker. Teenagers are prone to sleepwalking but this doesn't mean you should just leave them alone. Sleepwalking happens when the person is in a state of wakefulness and deep sleep. This means that the brain of the sleepwalker is active enough to make such movements but not active enough to wake up. If ever you encounter a sleepwalker, you can do two things. One is that you can lead him or her back to bed since there are many possibilities for that person to experience an accident like walking outside or falling down the stairs. Another is that you can scream as loud as you can but a bit far from the person. It's because that person might hurt you when he or she wakes up.
It takes seven years for a piece of gum to digest
Well, if you have swallowed large amounts of gum, it might take you seven years to get it out. According to science, large portions can easily lead to intestinal blockages that are prone to children. With smaller gums, it only takes days. Gums are made out of ingredients that can be broken down by the digestive system. These ingredients include sweeteners, flavoring, and softeners. Rest assured, this will definitely not take seven years, even a year actually.
