Facebook - Is it Safe?
Facebook, a social media platform where users post, share, react, and socialize. But is it really safe even though there is a security section of your account in the app?
Facebook currently has millions of users from real to fake accounts. You will never know who will have a friend request on your account as you scroll in your news feed. Most people are not really bothered since Facebook guarantees enough security for users, except for the issue of the data breach.
Here are some bizarre facts that are currently ongoing on Facebook:
LOCATION
Once, there was a programmer who created a Chrome plug-in called Marauder's Map, which is similar to the map Harry Potter had to be able to locate everyone in the castle. That programmer was able to track his friends using that plug-in. The map was able to give the programmer the exact location or coordinates of where his friends are. Before, the Facebook Messenger app had a location system wherein it traces your footsteps. It's actually good if you want to know where you have been or like you have been drunk one night and wants to know what happened next. But what if there is a stalker who wants to track you? Can they use the Facebook Messenger app? Apparently, Facebook has already disabled their location sharing system. But this doesn't mean that they are not collecting the data.
Some sort of COOKIES
It's not that thing you eat, okay? Cookies in the programming world is about data being stored whenever you visit something or allow the website to store them for future purposes. On Facebook, you might experience watching a Rhett and Link video about Pastas around the world and was able to finish it. After that, when the app "refreshes" the page, you will have tons of Rhett and Link videos again. I think that's a somehow clear explanation of how cookies work. It is not really a bad way for Facebook but have you ever wonder if those cookies will get you in trouble? For example, potential hackers can easily get into your account using those cookies. They can either build a new video and behind that is a virus ready to attack your account.
DATA COLLECTION
Besides these cookies, data collection is also not a good thing about Facebook. There is one incident where Facebook had an agreement with Mastercard where that company can get online details to know behavioral insights to be sold to banks. It's not really that much you say since Mastercard is a big company. But for some instance, one man spent $5 to be able to get a million Facebook profiles and information. What is worrying me is that Facebook didn't even bother to sue the man. Instead, they ordered the man to give the data, delete all those files from his computer, and to keep his mouth shut. It wasn't really a good move and I thought maybe for some reason, the company might want to hire the man since he's a "good" hacker.
