How the Old Testament sacrifices, especially the Passover prefigured the Eucharist.

In the account of the old testament, humanity is full of sins and sacrifices are prominent which can be done either bloody or unbloody. God knows everything that’s why He tested the faith of the people by asking them to sacrifice a precious life. However, God is merciful and prevents this from happening at the last moment. He sent angels to stop people from doing this inhumane act as well as against the commandment of God. When Jesus was baptized and started His mission, John the Baptist declared “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).  By these words, He indicated that Jesus is the perfect sacrifice for the sins of humanity in the old testament. Thus, the Passover celebration prefigured the Eucharist and took place during the last supper. During the last supper, He then said to His apostles, "I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:51). The consecrated bread and wine symbolize the blood and body that we are called to receive. He did this for the atonement of our sins and to be saved from the wrath of hell. Through the eucharist, Christ offered His death for our salvation. Therefore the Church, through the priests, continues to offer the same Eucharistic sacrifice and the people continually receive it in honor for the life He exchange for our deliverance from slavery to sin. The eucharistic sacrifice is where we are called to worship the Lamb of God, in spirit and truth.
