"100-year-old Brazilian breaks record after 84 years at same company"
In my perspective, this article can be associated with the idea of job evaluation. With this concept, “a process was conducted in order to determine the relative worth of the job for the purpose of creating a hierarchy of jobs.” After analyzing the relevant information for the specific job, the next step of the process is to determine the factors that contribute to the achievement of the organizational objectives. Those factors are crucial in order to identify whether the job position is still valuable or has a purpose in attaining the long-term goals of the organization. Thus, in the article, it was stated that Walter Orthmann, after being hired, showed outstanding skills, enthusiasm to learn, and always doing more than expected. With that, he was promoted and became successful in his higher position. With those experiences and other factors, it only shows that his position in the company is still important because he accomplish all the tasks or responsibilities required for his specific job. Moreover, compensable factors as what was mentioned in the module are part of the process of job evaluation, which also determines what aspect of the job will make it higher or lower than the others in the job hierarchy. In the case of Walter Orthman, he proved that he still acquires the factors that the company needs and that is maybe one of the reasons why he has worked at the same company for 84 years ever since.
It was cited in the article that “throughout his 84 years of work, he has seen many things change in the company, in the country, and in the world. As a result, he has come to understand that one of the most important parts of the business is to always be up-to-date and to adapt to different contexts.” Hence, with the fast-paced evolution or continuous discovery of new things specifically technology as an example, it may be difficult for some to adapt to the changes. However, everyone must understand that these changes will lead us to new knowledge and experiences that we may apply to improve our set of skills as well as grow in our specific careers. Moreover, in the long run, it may be our asset if we decided to pursue further learning new specific niches or skills. It may be an advantage to step up the ladder and achieve a higher position in the job hierarchy.
Walter believes that the best part about having a job is that it gives you a sense of purpose, commitment, and a routine. I think this is the same for me, as a college student who has the privileged of education and the opportunity to learn. It is somewhat my commitment to myself and to those people around me who genuinely supports and is proud of my small progress or any achievements. In addition, what he said relates to me as studying seems like a routine because I don’t have anything else to be busy with. That’s why even though sometimes it seems so exhausting already, I always try my best to give value and still prioritize my education as it is crucial in order to achieve the degree that I am aiming for. So that, in time, those years of me studying will not be put to waste and eventually not have regrets in the future as well as be proud of what I’ve worked hard for.
He stated that "When we do what we like, we don't see the time go by." Honestly, this was the line that struck me the most as from this statement, I somewhat question myself whether I still like what I am doing? is this really worth it? or is this really for me?. Lots of questions linger in my mind and his story was just motivating and encouraging to pursue as well as work really hard to attain the things that you really wanted to do in life. It just says that if you choose your passion, you will just enjoy working and will not notice that even though it consumes your time, you are still happy with what you are doing. When you decided to pursue the dream that you are longing for, you might be satisfied and be more comfortable working. His advice is also on point specifically to those fresh graduates or incoming graduates to try to work for a good company and in an area where they feel motivated. As the working environment is also important in building great employee-employer relationships and allows loyalty as well as trust.
In conclusion, this article provides important points including employee loyalty, equal opportunities for every employee without discrimination even in terms of age, a harmonious employee-employer relationship as well and an overall working environment. Therefore, I would gladly recommend this article to other people as this can motivate them to also work hard and pursue their passion, eventually attain growth in their specific field of interest, and prosper with personally or professionally.
