the beauty of rainbow mountain Brennisteinsalda, the most colorful mountain in iceland
We have already discussed the Zhangye Danxia rainbow mountain in China which once made a scene on the internet with its stunningly colorful hills.
In other countries it turns out that there are places similar to this hill. One of them is Brennisteinsalda.
According to the Atlas of Wonders website, Brennisteinsalda is a hill with unique natural conditions located in Landmannalaugar, Iceland. This hill is part of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve.
The soil in these hills contains sulfur, as the name implies, meaning 'sulfur wave'.
The hills in Brennisteinsalda have amazing colors, namely green, black, red, yellow, and blue. The black and blue colors come from lava and ash. The red color comes from the iron content in the soil covering the mountains. While the green nuance comes from the moss that coats the rocks there.
The name means in English: sulphur wave. It comes from the sulphur spots which have coloured its sides. But there are other colours, too: green from mosses, black and blue from lava and ashes, red from iron in the earth. It could very well be the most colourful mountain of Iceland and so its picture is often found in books and calendars.
The mountain is still visibly an active volcano with hot sulphur springs and vapour at its sides. The hiking trail Laugavegur passes by. In front of it there is an obsidian lava field.
