Bill Gates, born on October 28, 1955, is an American business magnate, software developer, and philanthropist. He co-founded Microsoft Corporation in 1975 with Paul Allen, and over the next few decades, he helped build it into the world's largest personal computer software company.

Gates was interested in computers from a young age and was programming at the age of 13. After dropping out of Harvard University, he and Allen founded Microsoft, which quickly became a dominant player in the software industry. Microsoft's operating system, Windows, became the most widely used operating system in the world, running on over 80% of all personal computers.

In addition to his work at Microsoft, Gates has also been a prolific philanthropist. Along with his wife, Melinda Gates, he founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has committed over $50 billion to global health and education initiatives.

Gates stepped down as CEO of Microsoft in 2000 but remained involved with the company until 2020 when he resigned from the board. He has since been focusing on his philanthropic work, including fighting diseases like malaria and polio, promoting global health and education, and combating climate change.
