According to the Guinness Book of Records, the Great Cassowary / Australian Cassowary / Southern Cassowary (lat. Casuarius casuarius) is the most dangerous bird in the world.
The third largest and one of the heaviest birds, the Great Cassowary can be up to 2 meters tall (average height is 127-170 cm), males can weigh up to 55 kg, and females up to 76 kg. Their three claws, sharp as knives, reach up to 12 cm in length, and this is one bird in the world that has some kind of protective armor, a helmet, with which it protects its head as it runs through a dense forest. And finally, these non-flying birds can run at a speed of 50 km / h!
And they are very aggressive.
The rainforests on the northeast coast of Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia are home to about 1,500 remaining Great Cassowaries in the wild. They are rarely seen in captivity (e.g. a zoo) because they are more aggressive than any other animal and therefore most often attack guards.
Males and females of these birds are quite different: females do not have brightly colored feathers, but they are therefore stronger and larger than males. During mating, it is the male who takes the passive role, and the females can also change three partners during one relationship. The last partner will be responsible for incubating the eggs and caring for the young (although it is unlikely that he is the father).
Large cassowaries, seemingly pubic birds, provoked can become extremely aggressive and dangerous. Although declared the most dangerous birds in the world, attacks on humans are not too frequent, and the last time they killed people was in 1926. The culprit for the attacks is mostly a man who has entered their territory or simply provokes them to attack.
According to local legend, the Great Cassowaries can open the bowels of a man or any other larger animal with their sharp claws, and kill it with just one blow. These are only local myths, but what is certain is that attacks happen, and it is almost impossible to defeat these birds. They run at a speed of 50 km / h, are very good swimmers and can jump up to 1.5 meters in height. The only way to escape is to climb a tree quickly, but be careful that it is not a tree with which fruit falls - because such great cassowaries consider it a source of food and can stay under it for days, protecting it from other animals.
