In an exciting development towards more blockchain adoption by food suppliers, PT Belfoods, in cooperation with McDonald's, announced that they are introducing food tracking tools in giant fast food restaurants in Indonesia.
For your information, "Belfoods" is a subsidiary of "PT Sierad Produce Tbk", a listed company on the Jakarta Stock Exchange, whose trademark is currently changing to "Sreeya".
"Belfoods" uses blockchain technology developed in partnership with "agritech", a company specialized in developing blockchain-based solutions.
Mr. Dicky Saylan, Managing Director of "Belfoods", told the source :
The project will start with 47 McDonald's outlets across Greater Jakarta where poultry will be purchased from Sreeya, and will be expanded as demand increases.
He added:
We have had extensive discussions with McDonald's, ranging from internal tracking needs only to extending this to end customers.
He said the launch date is still under discussion, but it will be in the next two months.
Dickie explained:
We will affix our Halal Blockchain logo and QR code in their outlets, as well as on the paper plates they use to serve fried chicken to their customers.
The blockchain logo stickers will spread the nature of the project, and customers who scan the QR code will be able to verify compliance and certificates verifying that the product is halal (slaughtered in the Islamic way) during the production process.
Sreeya is currently focusing on an exclusive cooperation with McDonald's in order to provide halal food by adopting blockchain technology.
After the collaboration ends in approximately a year, Sreeya will offer similar partnerships with other restaurants as well as retail outlets such as supermarkets and malls.
For your information, “Sreeya” is an integrated poultry company that manages the entire production chain from feed mills to breeding, hatchery, commercial farming, slaughterhouse and processing.
Sreeya generated revenue of 472 billion rupees ($ 33 million) in 2019, an increase of 17.7% from 401 billion rupees in 2018.
"Belfoods" is the brand of processed foods for "Sreeya" which operates four production lines: cuts of meat, meatballs, sausages, and steamed meat.
Mr. “Afzal Alissar” Director of Halal Products Industry at the National Committee for Sharia Economy and Finance in Indonesia (KNEKS) told the aforementioned source:
The collaboration between Sreeya and McDonald's is expected to stimulate more halal industry players to initiate similar campaigns to increase the transparency of their Sharia-compliant operations.
He added:
We expect more halal companies to take the initiative to do such cooperation.
As the largest potential player in the halal industry in the world, Indonesia needs to adopt this technology widely.
Blockchain technology provides traceability that can speed up the entire halal certification process, which usually takes months or years.
He also told “Afzal” by saying:
The ability to trace ingredients and verify halal products has been weaknesses in the industry for a long time, and this can be mitigated by using blockchain technology.
To achieve our vision of becoming a global hub for halal food by 2024, Indonesia needs to make great strides and cannot run business in the traditional, traditional way.
Blockchain technology is one of the key elements in making our vision a reality.
Nice.
