Facebook recently after rolling out an update to restrict teenagers under 18 to receive messages from adults to protect the teenagers from illicit content. This was discoverd on buzzfeed news where in an internal post written by Instagram VP of product Vishal Shah which says that:
“We will be building a new youth pillar within the Community Product Group to focus on two things: (a) accelerating our integrity and privacy work to ensure the safest possible experience for teens and (b) building a version of Instagram that allows people under the age of 13 to safely use Instagram for the first time.”
Thoughts on the news:
Firstly due to various laws by countries by hosting content for children under the age of 13 i don't see how this would succeed.
Secondly there are also laws prohibiting companies from targeting advertisements for children under the age of 13 which Facebook has been doing it for years with Instagram would not help the company grow either
Thirdly looking at Youtube for kids by Google they have to pay a fines for violation of the policies which Google have paid for Youtube for Kids.
Last but not the least we all know the ill affects of social media on children so i don't think most parents would be comfortable to allow their children to use this
