The Chain Bridges are the most beautiful bridges in the world. This Chain Bridge is one of the most famous parts of Budapest and is considered as one of the wonders of contemporary architecture.

Budapest Chain Bridge:

The Széchenyi Bridge is a suspension bridge over the Danube between Buda and Pest, west and east of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The Chain Bridge was the first permanent bridge in Budapest. Prior to that, the nearest bridge across the Danube was in Vienna, where the temporary bridge was used only in the summer months, dismantled in the winter to prevent freezing, and used to cross the river.

The bridge was designed by William Cyrne, a British engineer, and built by a Scottish engineer, Adam Clark, and was the first permanent bridge over the Danube in Hungary to be commissioned on November 20, 1849. Many see the construction of the bridge as a turning point in Budapest's prosperity and economic development. Because after the construction of this bridge, we are witnessing the sudden development of the economy in Hungary.

Architectural features of Széchenyi Chain Bridge:

This chain bridge is 375 meters long and 16 meters wide. The distance between its pillars is 202 meters and two stone lion statues support this bridge. There are two lanes for cars on this bridge and there is a sidewalk for walking and walking on its sides. At the time of its reopening, it was the tallest bridge in Europe, with two towers supporting the structure with iron chains. The reason for naming this structure, which is known as a chain bridge, is because of these iron chains. One of the most important elements used on the bridge is that it has two stone sculptures made in the shape of a lion.

Reason for naming Széchenyi Chain Bridge:

In 1898, the bridge was renamed in honor of Ishtvan Széchenyi, one of the main proponents of the construction of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. The project of building a permanent bridge over the Danube was launched.

Demolition and reconstruction of Budapest Chain Bridge:

In 1945, at the end of World War II, the structure was blown up by the Germans to expand the Red Army. One of the first structures to be rebuilt after the end of the war was the Chain Bridge, which reopened in 1949. The current bridge is an exact copy of the previous version.
