Ekushey February or the Shaheed day is a red-letter day in the history of Bangladesh. It is there a turning point in our national life.
Soon after partition in 1947, the people of East Bangla realised that they are were dominated by the people of West Pakistan. This idea gained momentum when the government declared the Urdu should be the only state language of the country. The student of Daka University protested against this. Their argument it was that Bengali was the mother tongue of the maturity people while Urdu what is spoken by the minority people. So Bangali should be one of the state languages. But the rules of Pakistan did not listen to reason.So the students start movement for establishing the right of their mother tongue.Defying the orders of the authority the students brought out procession on 21 Februar, 1952.The police fired on them.Barkat,Salam,Rafiq,Jabbarandsome others were killed.After this brutal killingthe language movements pread all over the countr.
The significance of the language movement was far reaching.The spirit of nationalism rejuvenated as a resultof this movemen. Consequently,it led to the war of Liberatio. Ultimatel, through the bloodywar of Liberationin 1971,Bangladesh emerger as an independent sovereign state.The LanguageMovement unified the people of Bangladesh and this unity is the basis of our nation. That is why we observe Ekushe February as the Shaheed day every year and play homage to the Language Martyrs.
