Learn to talk freely about your feelings
Do you feel alienated from your emotions or are you friends with them? Would you like to learn to accept and express your emotions in a healthy way? The answers to all these questions about emotions can be found in the concept of emotional wellness.
The most important element of emotional wellness is self-confidence. Bill Hettler, one of the pioneers of the concept of wellness, approaches wellness with a six-dimensional modeling. These include "social dimension, professional dimension, spiritual dimension, physical dimension, intellectual dimension and emotional dimension". Emotional wellness involves being aware of our emotions, understanding them and managing them efficiently. Greenberg and Dintiman define emotional wellness as the ability to control one's emotions in various situations in life. In summary, emotional wellness is the ability to feel and show all human emotions.
Emotional characteristics of people with high perception of wellness are;
1) the ability to act without the approval and trust of others,
2) a clear understanding of one's own self-identity
3) personal competence and self-satisfaction and
4) self-confidence in general.
So, what can we do for emotional wellness? Learn to talk freely about your feelings If you come from a family where emotions were not expressed freely, you may now, as an adult, avoid talking about your feelings. However, unexpressed, repressed emotions have the ability to make us uncomfortable. If you wish, you can consult a psychologist about this issue and learn to recognize your emotions and learn to express them comfortably.
Accept your emotions Most of us learn from childhood that negative emotions such as anger and fear are unacceptable, "problematic" emotions. However, all our emotions, including our negative emotions, are for our benefit. Of course, none of us likes to feel negative emotions, but when we deny our emotions, we can actually make things worse. Accepting our feelings is one of the most effective actions towards emotional health. Accepting our emotions means allowing them to exist without judging them or trying to change them. All our emotions are trying to send us a message. Accepting our emotions as they are will make it easier for us to receive their messages.
Recognize the transient nature of your emotions As you well know, none of our emotions are permanent. We can experience many different emotions throughout the day. Once we get into the habit of accepting our emotions, we can become more aware of their impermanence. If you are a person who is uncomfortable with some of your emotions, the transient nature of emotions can reduce your discomfort.
Keep an emotion diary One way to recognize your emotions is to keep an emotion diary. By recording how you feel and what you think, you can better track your emotions and recognize the warning signs of strong emotions. Your emotions can help you get to know yourself better. As long as you know how to communicate with them.
