Newspaper is a paper that carries news to us. It tells us what is happening at home and abroad. It is the storehouse of knowledge and information. We cannot do a single day without newspaper. In a word, the importance of newspaper in our daily life is inevitable .

History and types of newspaper : The newspaper was first published in China. The first Bengali newspaper was The Samachar Darpan published in 1818. There are many inds of newspapers. They are dailies, weeklies, monthlies, quarterlies etc. The daily newspapers contain the news of daily affairs of home and abroad. The other papers publish stories, poems, essays etc.

IMPORTANCE OF READING NEWSPAPER :

Newspaper is very useful to all sections of people. We cannot think of a modern world without it. It has made the world smaller. The particular instances of the importance of reading newspaper is given below—

Source of information and knowledge : We get all sorts of information in the newspaper. It contains all types of news and views and thereby enriches our knowledge. It gives us up-to-date information of the current events that are happening over the whole world within twenty four hours.

patriotic feelings : Newspaper helps people to express opinions on varied current topics. Thus, it helps to form public opinion and also voices public grievances. Moreover, newspaper plays a significant role in raising the morale of the people and enhancing the patriotic feelings of the countrymen. For example, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, some newspapers consistently encouraged the freedom fighters in their struggle for independence.

Promotes publicity : Newspaper is the most powerful instrument for promoting publicity. New bills and Govt. notifications are circulated through it. Besides, news of local communities, railway timings, new laws and projects etc. are also given publicity through newspaper. Newspaper is the chief source of publishing both the social and commercial advertisements.

Educative value: Newspaper has a great educative value too. It is the cheapest means of mass education. Students read newspapers to supplement the education that they receive at schools and colleges.

Creates public awareness: Newspaper contains letters to the editor, news on current political situation, social development, importance of mass education, national crisis, economy, healthcare, crime and detection etc. and helps to form public awareness. Unbiased news on political condition makes the citizens conscious about their rights and responsibilities which are the key features for the exercise of true democracy.

Means of entertainment : Newspaper is an important means of recreation. It concentrates on sports, media, life style, fashion etc. and thereby entertain us. It also serves as a good companion in our solitary hours or in a journey.
