স্নায়ুযুদ্ধের পর ১৯৯১ সালের ডিসেম্বর মাসে মধ্য এশিয়ার এই দেশটি শেষ সদস্য হিসেবে সোভিয়েত পরিবার থেকে বেরিয়ে যায় এবং "রিপাবলিক অফ কাজাখাস্তান" নামে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে। কাজাখাস্তানে ছিলো সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের পারমানবিক অস্ত্রের পরীক্ষা কেন্দ্র এবং তৎকালীন সময়ের সমাজতান্ত্রিক প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী চীনের অবস্থানের জন্য কৌশলগত কারণেও এখানে পারমানবিক অস্ত্র মোতায়েন ছিলো। স্বাধীনতার পর তৎকালীন সময়ে কাজাখাস্তান চতুর্থ বৃহত্তম পারমানবিক অস্ত্রের ভান্ডারের মালিক হয়।উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে সোভিয়েত আমলের প্রায় ১৪০০ পারমানবিক অস্ত্রের মালিক হয়েও মুসলিম অধ্যুষিত এই দেশটি তা ১৯৯৫ সালের মধ্যে সম্পূর্ণ রূপে সোভিয়েতের মূল উত্তরাধিকারী রাশিয়ার কাছে ফিরিয়ে দিয়ে Nuclear Non-Proliferation চুক্তি স্বাক্ষরের মাধ্যমে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে "পারমানবিক অস্ত্র মুক্ত" দেশে পরিণত হয়। পাশাপাশি তারা সোভিয়েত আমলের পারমানবিক অস্ত্রের পরীক্ষার কেন্দ্রও বন্ধ করে দেয়।সদ্য স্বাধীন দেশের ক্ষেত্রে পারমানবিক অস্ত্রের রক্ষণাবেক্ষণের ঝামেলা,সামরিক উত্তেজনা থেকে দূরে থেকে নিরপেক্ষতা বজায় রাখা, সোভিয়েত আমলের পারমানবিক পরীক্ষার পার্শ্বপ্রতিক্রীয়ায় সৃষ্ট স্বাস্থ্য ঝুকি এবং পরবর্তী প্রজন্মের উপর এর বাজে প্রভাব বিবেচনা করেই মূলত কাজাখরা পারমানবিক অস্ত্র ত্যাগ করে এবং ভবিষ্যতে এ অস্ত্রের পরীক্ষা না চালানোর ব্যাপারে মনস্থির করে। রাশিয়ার ঘনিষ্ঠ স্থলবেষ্ঠিত এই দেশটি এখন অর্থনৈতিকভাবে বিশ্বের অন্যতম স্বচ্ছল একটি দেশ।
