What is REM sleep?

REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement. REM sleep is a sleep stage which usually follows the deep sleep stage where there is generally no eye movement or muscle activity. Remember the time when people wake you up from your deep sleep and you feel really out of place and you really need to take your time to get back to your functioning self? Yes, that's the stage of deep sleep. What usually follows that is REM sleep. In REM sleep, breathing becomes more rapid and irregular and your eyes also tend to move in various directions. That's why this stage is called REM sleep.

Dreams usually happen during REM sleep so that's why some people say that if you remember your dreams then you have slept very well because you have crossed the deep sleep stage and also the REM stage meaning your sleep cycle has completed fully.

There is also an old Indian myth that whatever you see in your dreams just before waking up usually tends to come true. That's both freaky and exciting at the same time!
