Bitcoin and Pizza? Yes, there is an interesting story about how the Grand Daddy of cryptocurrency, BITCOIN, and Pizza are related, so much so that there is a Bitcoin Pizza Day!
1) What's the Story?
Laszlo Hanyecz was a Florida man, a developer and a miner of Bitcoin. On May 18th 2010, he posted on Bitcoin.org forums the following :
“I'll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day. I like having left over pizza to nibble on later … If you're interested please let me know and we can work out a deal.”
Funny enough, the deal took 3 more days, agreed by bitcoin user Jeremy “Jercos” Sturdivant, and he finally received his Pizzas only on May 22 - THE BITCOIN PIZZA DAY!
2) Why is it so special?
This transaction of 10,000 BTC for 2 large Papa John's Pizza was the first ever recorded use of Bitcoin in a commercial transaction, and Laszlo Hanyecz became the first man to spend Bitcoin for a commodity, and Jercos, the first man to receive!
3) How much was Bitcoin worth then?
1 BTC was worth a mind boggling $0.004, and his 10,000 BTC was worth about $41, which ironically made Laszlo to even comment that he apparently got "free Pizzas" ! Interestingly enough, Jercos sold his 10k Bitcoins for a total of about $400
Well, 10,000 BTC worth only about $500,000,000 now !
4) The Pizzas
Laszlo Hanyecz had taken photos of his Pizzas and had posted them.
Eager to know how these "free Pizzas" look? Head over to the thumbnail of this post! Yes, they are the same exact Pizzas!
5) The only Pizza?
Laszlo wasn't done yet; and history has that he bought more pizzas and several other items with his Bitcoins, until the mining rewards were not so great anymore.
WOW!
Thanks for reading till the end
Cheers 😊
