There is one word in this world that will never change and that is “Change”. Changes are so evident in our society now especially when Covid 19 strikes. We all don’t know before that these viruses will stop our normal lives. We are not prepared to bring cure to someone who is infected with this virus. Look around now and see the differences within our society. We can definitely say, changes are happenning.
How do we cope up when change happened? Some people are just passive, some are reactive while some are active in doing their best in order that this change will result to a better life. As I observed, there are 3 kinds of changes that are evident in oursociety today.
SOCIAL CHANGE. Social change happens when a substantial transformation of behavioral patterns, values and social norms change over time. There are several and wide-ranging causes of social change like technology, population, and environment.
a. Technology – Nowadays, technologies are very beneficial to human being and it shaped changes in our lives today. Gearing towards 21st century, numerous innovations were made. Examples for these technology inventions are advances in the field of communication, transportation, devices, appliances, infrastructures and agricultural technology. Indeed, we cannot deny the fact that technology has impacted all aspects of modern life.
Yes because of our mobile phones, tablets and personal computers we were able to sell some products or items online. We usually post the item on our social media account and even we offer free delivery to our loyal customers. Online jobs like different tutorials, blogging and vlogging are very famous to everyone. You can now earn online by using your talents like singing, dancing, cooking and even by playing mobile games.
b. Population – The composition of population is changing at every level of society over time and space. The births increase and decrease contributes to how society changes. The population trends have an incredible interconnected impact on all aspects of society around the world.
c. Environment - The natural disasters is considered one that contributes social change. It changes the physical, social, and economic landscape of humanity. As human populations expand its territories to move into more vulnerable areas, we see a surge number of people affected by natural catastrophes.
Filipinos are all resilient especially when there is a natural disaster like typhoon and earthquake. If we can not support or help financially, some would post on their social media accountand ask for help so that others will know their condition. We support them by sending goods, clothings, clean waters, medicines and other personal items so that they can recover as soon as possible.
2. POLITICAL CHANGE. Happens when the rulers in a nation lose power or the kind of governance in the nation. Governance is the type of framework used to run a nation. Example of the kinds of governance is democracy and monarchy. There are two manners by which political change may happen: inside or external.
a. Internal political change this is imposed by people of the country. It can be done through significant events, such as elections and rulers opt to end his power over, or through irregular events, such as a coup d’état or a rebellion.
b. External political change is imposed by or from other countries. It is usually accomplished through military threats or extortions but could occur through embargoes and/or withholding foreign aid. If it is successfully accomplished by the military, then a new leader will be positioned in charge by the triumphant attempt to impose foreign power.
3. CULTURAL CHANGE - this idea denotes that some internal and external factors influence the cultural pattern of societies leading to change.
There are three main factors of cultural change:
A. Contact - The exchange of ideas between two societies will evidently change the culture of both societies. This is done through the process called “cultural diffusion” and “acculturation”. Cultural diffusion is the transfer of cultural practices, beliefs and social activities from one group of people to another group of people while acculturation is the process of borrowing social patterns of values and customs from one group to another.
B. Technology Evolution – The emergence of technological evolution will bring change of culture of one’s country. Example for the latest inventions created by technology, is our means of communication, transportation, devices and many more that are very noticeable in our society
C. Geographical and ecological factor - The type of climate, altitude of the place, and its geographical location contributes the type of lifestyle and culture of the people.
Social, Cultural and Political are just 3 sample of changes right now. Because of Covid 19, we make sure we always observed health protocols and maitain social distancing. Social gatherings like festivities, church activities, local annual events were postponed. Our cultural heritage were not allowed to visit by tourist especially foreigners. The tradition we have as Filipinos like “pagmamano” or when you enter the house of some elders or when you pass by a person whom you know like a relative in a street, we used to get their hand and bless by putting their hand on our heads while we bow down was stop because of the pandemic. Political changes like different health protocols, policies and realigned budgets were implemented in order for our national and local government to surpass the threat and the effects brought by this virus.
Changes will continue to make changes to this world. We are capable of doing something today not yesterday nor tomorrow. Let us help one another for us to win this battle against viruses.
