A Dutch Delicacy: The History and Tradition of Cheese Krokets
The cheese kroket is a beloved Dutch snack with a history dating back centuries. Originating in the late 18th century, krokets were created as a way to use up leftovers. Variations emerged featuring different fillings, but cheese krokets always remained a top choice due to the Netherlands' renowned cheesemaking.
Today, krokets remain cemented in Dutch culture as an integral part of social gatherings. Pub culture especially embraces them as ideal bar snacks. While other varieties exist, cheese reigns supreme as the top-selling type nationwide. Generations have fond memories and inside jokes stemming from sharing krokets with family and friends.
Preserving culinary traditions has become important as globalization influences diets. Artisanal cheesemakers developing new varieties have helped maintain cheese krokets' popularity. Their balance of crispy exteriors and hot, melty interiors in one delicious bite is beloved.
