Workday - Mammography Digitizer Maintenance

I am going to teach you something about mammography and the equipment used to perform this clinical study: The Mammograph.

First, we must know : What is mammography and why is it important?

Mammography is a clinical study used to obtain images of the breast through the application of X-rays. Mammography is often used to detect possible signs of breast cancer in early stages. According to WHO, each year in the Americas, more than 462,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and nearly 100,000 die from the disease.

Mammography is very important because it helps detect breast cancer before it spreads. Giving you more time to act and save your life before it is too late.

The mammograph is a radiological equipment that is designed to obtain images of the breast from the application of X-rays to the breast.

Now, my job : To do maintenance on the digitizer

Once the clinical study is performed on the patient, other processes follow. The image must be digitized and for this you need: THE DIGITALIZER.

With this digitization process, the images can be obtained. First, a phosphor plate that can be photostimulated by X-rays must be inserted into the digitizer. Then, by means of a complex computerized process, the images can be completely digitized.

To perform maintenance on the RX digitizer, the equipment must be disassembled. This is done in order to have access to the interior of the digitizer and to be able to blow out the dust with the electric blower.

• Dust must be removed from the equipment because it can affect the operation of electronic components, sensors and even devices such as the power supply or other electronic cards.

• The electrical wiring and power supply voltage of the equipment should be checked to make sure that everything is working properly.

• Extreme care must be taken at all times. Any error may result in an unexpected failure.

• Electronic boards and power supply should be cleaned with electronic cleaner. This is used to deep clean the components of sulfate and corrosion that have accumulated over time.

• Finally, the erase lamp should be checked. The erase lamp is used to erase the information from the photosensitive plates, so that they can be used again for other studies.

The erase lamp can fail for many reasons. But one of the most common failures is bulb failure. This lamp uses 24V/100watt bulbs, a total of ten (10) bulbs.

The eraser lamp that I removed from the equipment for maintenance had a fault and the reason for the fault was two burned out bulbs. What I did was to replace these bulbs and clean the blanking lamp externally. Finally the lamp was put back in place, inside the digitizer.Two bulbs with burned-out filament

It may seem easy, but it is very difficult to realize the fault when you do not have the necessary experience to be able to operate and disassemble the equipment.

Finally the equipment is operational and ready for use :

Finally, I would like to share with you the satisfaction it gave me to know that I was able to solve this problem and of course get some money for my work. The customers are happy to have their equipment ready to be used and I am also happy because I get paid for a job that is really not easy to do.

As a biomedical engineer I must always try to find the solution to the failures that may have the medical equipment of hospitals, clinics and health institutions
