Newcastle took on Everton at the Goodison Park and you would expect it to be a tough game but Everton to edge it due to current form but Newcastle had other agenda. They didn't come here to play and that was what they showed.
It was a pressure-relieving win for Steve Bruce's side who has been without a win for 9 games. Steve Bruce had endured intense criticism from the fan base as he lost the last 5 single.
James Rodriguez started the match again. He scored in the last match with his sweetly taken goal against Leicester City. He was unable to get on the score sheet this time around.
This win for Newcastle is their first-ever Premier League game win since December 12th at the Goodison Park and also their first point since the start of 2021.
Wilson showed his intent right from the start of the match when he fired an effort over the bar. And there was a disappointment feeling too on the part of Everton when a free-kick was taken, the ball in came to Mina, touched his body and went over the bar. It would have been a lucky goal but at this stage, it wouldn't have mattered. A goal is a goal.
Newcastle had a free kick taken by Jonjo Shelvey but he could only fire his effort over the bar even though he was at the edge of the box. Everton tried to respond too via Richarlison who was hoping to catch the goalkeeper unaware but his effort went over.
The half time came with none of these teams adding to the scoreline. It ended 0-0 at half time.
Both teams tried to find answers for their respective teams but that extra bite was missing. They came close at a few occasions but then there was nothing to separate the two sides.
There was a corner kick in the 73rd minute that was taken by Shelvey and the ball came to Wilson. It was a brilliant header by Wilson and Newcastle for their lead. 1-0.
That was a relief and seeing the time it came, Newcastle would be dreaming of a win already since they are so close to winning it.
Callum Wilson had another opportunity to add to the talky. He expertly rounded up the goalkeeper, Pickford after he received a brilliant pass. He beat the goalkeeper and then he couldn't beat the post too. His effort went out after he struck the base of the goal post.
In the added time of the game, Jamal Lewis broke through on the side of the pitch and he found Callum Wilson with a long pass across. Wilson's first touch let him down but he composed himself and fired a low drive shot into the far bottom left of the post leaving Pickford with disappointment. Wilson got his two goals on the day and comfortably sealed the win for Newcastle. 2 goals for Wilson and 2 goals for Newcastle with a huge 3 points.
Callum Wilson's brace set him up for his 50th and 51st Premier League goal in this game. It also got him into double figures on the night. As for Newcastle, it also ended a run of 9 Premier League matches without a win for Steve Bruce's side. This is the first league double Newcastle would be having over the Toffees.
Steve Bruce had to switch to a 4-4-2 Diamond so they can at least get a draw but they got more than they bargained for.
Wilson turned up today as he was a constant threat, a complete menace to Everton's defence line. He got Newcastle's only 3 short on target as well.
What a win for Newcastle especially to the in-form Everton and to do it away is even more remarkable. Good job by Newcastle.
As we have seen this season so far, nothing is predictable. No result is cast in stone as you have to work hard to grind out the result in the Premier League. It is a welcome win for Newcastle but also a moment of reflection for Everton. They need to go back to the drawing board and see where it went wrong.
Newcastle sits 16th with 22 points while Everton sits 7th with 33 points. Even though Burnley that is ahead of Newcastle is having a game in hand, this win is a good step in the right direction for Newcastle. The battle continues...
