Romans 1:18 (NIV)

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

God is angry with our sins. He is not happy with our lies, with the killings we execute and greed that we exhibit. He is angry with the way He has shown us love and yet we still deliberately hurt Him and this is why we have been enjoined as written in the Bible that we should go back to our first love. The Bible recorded that we have gone away from the God of our fathers and carved our own truth for ourselves. God's standard is sure and cannot be compromised.

Revelations 2:4&5 (NIV)

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.

Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

When we say God is angry, in His anger, there is love in it because His anger is to bring us back to Him. His anger is to give a timely reminder to us that we need to go back to Him. Have you seen a situation so dire happen and you see people becoming more religious and then watching their ways? Exactly. Those moments bring a lot of things into perspective and that is what the anger of the Lord wants to achieve, to bring us back to our knees and yearn for God again.

Psalms 7:11 (NIV)

God is a righteous judge, a God who displays his wrath every day.

Hebrews 12:26 (NIV)

At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”

When we offend our parents by doing something completely opposite of what they asked us to do, does that mean we would think they are wicked if they get angry at us? We focus too much on the happenings rather than the reason, the motive and the end game of that anger, which is to bring us to repentance and do things better. This same scenario can be said of God. His major goal and agenda are to bring us back to Him. He doesn't hate us. He is not always angry with us because His mercies are new every morning. In His anger is His mercy.

Behind God's seeming frown hides His smiling face.

His mercies run deeper than the ocean and He is so slow to anger. Just when we think God is angry, He is actually not angry but it is our guilt playing tricks on us because the devil would always remind us of our guilt just to cage us and make us go deeper into it with the thoughts that, 'God is angry. He can never forgive this. I've sunk too deep'.

He said in His Word

Hebrews 8:12 (NIV)

For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Isaiah 43:25 (NIV)

“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.

We can see from the above scriptural references that His mercy is there and the end goal is to bring us back to Him. He is a jealous God because He loves us and wants us all to Himself.

Exodus 20:5&6 (NIV)

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

God sees everything. He sees the lies, the death, the evil being perpetrated by humans yet He is slow to anger because if He were to act, He would have killed a lot of people instantly. He is slow to anger because He wants to give chances to people so they can repent.

Humans respond to threatening situations more as earlier mentioned here as it drives them to God. They suddenly started praying and asking for mercy but God wants it to be genuine. You ask, what about those who have died? The Bible says it is appointed unto man to die once and after that, it is judgement. They died because their time is up. Even if there was no natural disaster, once their time is up, they would still die. Our times and seasons are in God's hands. If a believer was among those who died, it is an honour because their death is also to accomplish the will of the Father. If their death could draw people to God in fear and reference, then it is worth taking.

We seem to forget sometimes that the earth is not our home but the Heaven is. Our body is just to connect us to the realities of the world but it is our soul that matters. Our souls won't die but our body would. They might suffer death to the body but their souls are intact and only God determines when our time is up.

Proverbs 15:3 (NIV)

The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.
