For every sin there is a punishment or some consequences. Which is why even after the thief on the right hand demonstrated his faith in Jesus, it still didn't make him not go through that punishment. His faith save him from eternal damnation.

It is still better to fall into the hand of God regarding the consequences of our sins than to fall into the hand of men

2 Samuel 24:14

David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”

You might wonder, since our righteousness is like filthy rags, why bother to be righteous at all since the standards of God are so high? Let's see,

Isaiah 64:6 (NIV)

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

God sees the heart. Your heart and intentions for doing what you do matters to God. He sees your heart and knows the thoughts and intentions thereof.

Luke 16:15 (NIV)

He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

Don't forget that, the thief on the right hand before a change of heart, also mocked God. Surprised? Let's check

Mark 15:32 (NIV)

Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Whatever happened in those 3 hours made him have a change of heart. He had an open mind which was why he came to the conclusion that Jesus knew nothing for what He was being punished for and his faith saved him unlike the second thief on the left.

Forget all you think you have heard and read about God and be open minded. Open your mind to the wonders of the world, new possibilities and the obvious, then you will know God rewards our faith. He said without faith, it is impossible to please Him

Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
