These are the amazing things I learned from Bro. Eli Soriano's teaching on the above-mentioned topic in addition to my own personal research as well.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

The truth has to be told and that is, depression is real. A lot of people have allowed the cares and worries of the world to consume them, not because they want to but then, we are responsible for our lives. When you allow the approval of others to override your inherent traits, then it is normal that we allow negative thoughts to creep into our hearts and our thoughts and the moment we allow it, we set the ground for depression to kick in.

When a defining moment comes, define the moment or else the moment will define you.

As a believer, we need to have faith in God and that is a guaranteed way to cushion the effect of depression. Depression is real and a lot of people are suffering from it. With this admittance, having faith in God is like a cushion which means even when you fall, the impact won't be as much as it would be when you hit the floor. God didn't promise us a problem-free world He only told us He would be with us every single step of the way. He said, in the world, you will have tribulations but be of good cheer because I have overcome the world.

When we have faith in God, we will take Him by His Word and know that He will never allow His word to pass over without being fulfilled. God is not a man that He would lie, neither is He a son of man that He would repent. He has never given a word and He won't bring it to pass. He has never promised anything that He won't fulfil. Faith in God is a cushion for life's trouble.

Like 16:20-22 (NIV)

At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores

and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.

By faith, we can overcome anything and that includes depression or anxiety. Expectations in people will always lead to disappointment and depression but the expectation in God will never lead us astray. This explains why the poor Lazarus only fed at the table of the rich man and expected nothing more from the rich man. Too much expectation in a failing and changing human would always lead to depression. Have faith in the unchanging God. If the poor Lazarus had no faith in God, then it wouldn't be recorded that the angels carried him into heaven when he died. Having faith in God takes your mind away from the cares of this world.

Unthankfulness can also lead to depression because it shows that we are not grateful for the life and the things we have and we are consumed by the expectations of others and the standard the world is judging us with that's why the book of Philippians said 'by prayer and thanksgiving'. It means we should have faith - by prayer, and also be thankful for the things we have and the expectation of the things to come. The Bible is complete.

The truth is, we will all die. Whether we like it or not. The rich, the poor, the learned, the illiterates, the whites, the blacks, etc. We will all die and rather than be preoccupied with death we should rather be preoccupied with the thoughts of the afterlife which would enable us to make an informed decision and also know that we are sojourners here on earth.

Hebrews 9:27 (NIV)

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,

Our story doesn't end here. It might end on earth but we have eternity to live for. Depression means we are choosing to lose here on earth and then miss out in heaven because God gave us life for a purpose. Death in itself is not the end but an entry into eternal life, only for a believer. We cannot live forever.

For a believer, dying is like a graduation from an institution. It means you are done with your course and would be more than happy to see what is out there. For a believer, it means you are done with your course here on earth and you will be presented with your certificate to live in the afterlife and see what is out there, singing and dining with God till eternity.

Have faith in God. He is on the throne. Have faith in God, He watches over His own. He cannot fail, He must prevail, have faith in God.

Isaiah 57:1 (NIV)

The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil.
