It was not only river Jordan that John the Baptist Baptized in the Bible.
John 3:23 (NIV)
Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized.
I love the way the Bible always hammer on every detail. The Bible says here that 'Now' and the keyword; 'Also'. It points to the fact that river Jordan was not the only place that is acceptable for Baptism. The main reason why He picked this river Aenon was that there was plenty of water there and the availability of that water met the need of those who came.
The major significant of that to our modern world is that there is no barrier in the realm of the spirit. If it had been restricted to only River Jordan, how then do you expect people in our modern world who live far away from River Jordan to be baptized, since we say salvation is for all?
That singular act made it possible for us to have access to Baptism in our modern world these days because we cannot overemphasize the importance of Baptism to a believer. We are to shed out old self and take on the new nature of God. We have confessed that with our faith and Baptism is a practical example for us to do that as well because Jesus modelled that pattern for us.
Baptism is a major step to salvation and having it restricted to just a place where not everyone would have access to it when salvation has been given to the whole world and not just the Jews, it would mean others are being deprived the access to salvation and Jesus died for all, not just a selected few.
1 Peter 3:20-21 (NIV)
to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,
and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
Seeing how important it is and that Jesus laid the ground for it when He told the disciples to go and testify to the world and do the works which He has done, then it would defeat that purpose if others, regardless of location wouldn't have access to this step towards salvation.
Mark 10:39 (NIV)
“You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”
To further point out that the proximity to water might have been the reason River Jordan was picked in the first place which buttressed what John said in the reference scripture above when he mentioned there was also water in Aenon. It is more about obeying the injunction of Jesus to be Baptized rather than sticking to River Jordan. It is more about the fulfilment of what Jesus went through.
Consider the scripture below:
Acts 8:36 (NIV)
As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”
AMP:And Philip said, If you believe with all your heart [if you have a conviction, full of joyful trust, that Jesus is the Messiah and accept Him as the Author of your salvation in the kingdom of God, giving Him your obedience, then] you may. And he replied, I do believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
NIV:And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.
