Let us consider this Bible passage first as shared by Bro. Eli Soriano in his teaching and the valuable lessons I picked up from it.

Mark 10:39 (NIV)

“We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,

Jesus has given us an example in the above scriptural reference. He was more particular about the Baptism itself and not about the place. Jesus had His Baptism in the River Jordan but he never referred to where He had it rather than the major reason for the Baptism itself.

You can have Baptism in your local Churches and any designated place with water and we are not to go all the way to Jordan to have it when we know we cannot afford it. We have established this truth in the posts made before this one.

Baptism is the washing away of sin. It is an act of total repentance from our sins and there is a practical example of that when you are immersed into the water - dead to sin and then raised out of the water again - alive in Jesus Christ. It is a step of faith for every believer to take; being dead to sin and being alive to God through Jesus - hence Baptism.

1 Peter 2:22 (NIV)

“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.”

Many would wonder, then why would Jesus allowed Himself to be Baptized since He was without sins and there is no need for any repentance from Him. He simply allowed that you fulfil all righteousness and also to model the pattern we are supposed to follow.

He set Himself as an example for us on how we are expected to do things and what is required of us.

Acts 2:38(NIV)

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 22:16 (NIV)

And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’

The Bible passages above point us to the whole essence of what Baptism is about. It is about the remission and washing away of our since to invite the new nature of God into our lives.

Baptism is not for children or babies as we can read what the whole meaning of Baptism stands for. It is to be done with an understanding of the sacrifice of Jesus and determination to model the life that Jesus modelled here on earth.

I won't say anything against those who Baptize babies. It is not my place to say anything against what they do without having an understanding of it but what I have an understanding of is what I shared above. Baptism is majorly for repentance from sin and to usher in the new nature of God. It is not a ritual but a major step every believer who has confessed Jesus as their Lord and Saviour with their own mouth should take.

1 Peter 2:21 (NIV)

To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

As a true believer of Jesus, we are to follow in His steps and following in His steps mean we should model His life while He was on earth. He led us to the Father and did all in obedience to Him.

Baptism is an important part of our Christian walk and that includes both the physical - immersion by water and the spiritual - by the Holy Ghost.
