Chelsea hosted Everton with the hope of winning so as to break into the top 4 and that was what they did on the night. Interesting to note that in 26 games against Chelsea (Chelsea played at home) Everton had never won Chelsea for that stretch.
In the 16th minute, Jorginho should have put his side ahead when he hit a first time half volley that went just wide of the post.
Alonso had a brilliant freekick destined for the top corner but Pickford had to be very sure and he got a hand to it which made it go for a corner kick.
In the 22nd minute, Chelsea got ahead. Alonso got ahead of Holgate and found Havert with his effort. Havert's effort came off Godfrey while attempting to block it off and it went straight into the net for an own goal, 1-0.
The first half ended 1-0 with the own goal separating the two sides.
Havert thought he had gotten the second goal in the 54th minute when the ball found him in the box. He tried to chest it down which he did but it was ruled for offside even though he scored the ball. VAR intervened and confirmed the decision of the referee.
Richarlison wasted a golden chance in the 57th minute when he put his effort wide in the box. It was shocking especially coming from him. Not quite long after, Reece James went for a shot rather than find a teammate and he missed.
A lovely through ball found Havert in the box and Pickford mistimed his challenge and gave away a penalty. The referee had no choice but to point to the spot. Jorginho stepped up and buried the penalty in the 65th minute to put Chelsea ahead with 2 goals on the night.
In the 80th minute, Timo Werner outpowered Godfrey and rather than bury his chance, he didn't quite get it right and Pickford saved it well. Timo Werner was denied again in the 85th minute when Mason Mount found him. Pickford saved it and the rebound fell to Kante. He struck his shot as well and Pickford was also on hand to save it.
Chelsea had a series of opportunities to extend their lead towards the end of the game through Kante and Mount but they couldn't find that extra bite. It was interesting to see them ahead with 2 goals and playing as though they needed more goals to win.
The game ended 2-0 and Chelsea's resurgence continues with Tuchel being the first coach to keep a clean sheet in his first 5 games while being unbeaten in 6 Premier League games. Chelsea now moved to 4th and just 3 points behind Leicester City. West Ham would be hosting Leeds United later on.
