PSG hosted Barcelona after thrashing them 4-1 in the first leg at Camp Nou. PSG would be hoping not to have a repeat of their collapse after they won Barcelona in Paris 4-0 only to fall to a 6-1 defeat at Camp Nou.
Dembele had the first real chance of the game in the 12rh minute when he was played through. He did brilliantly to cut inside but his effort could only go far and over the bar. PSG had a chance of their own in the 15th minute but it was a tame Mbappe's shot that did little to threaten the goalkeeper.
In the 29th minute, a penalty was given to PSG when Icardi's backheel was caught by Lenglet after trying to connect with Kurzawa's ball in. The goalkeeper gathered the ball because there was no chance it would have gotten to Icardi but that infringement caused the VAR to invite the referee to have a look at it and he deemed it worthy of a yellow card and a penalty. Mbappe stepped up and sent the goalkeeper to the wrong way to give PSG the lead and extend their aggregate to 5-1. Barcelona looked deflated already.
In the 37th minute, Messi produced a moment of magic. The released a wonderful strike which flew and found the back of the net. It was a great piece of individual brilliance to level the match, 1-1.
The first minute of the extra time in the first half, Griezmann's feet was hit right in the box and the referee had no choice but to point to the spot. Lionel Messi stepped up to take it but shockingly, he couldn't score. Keylon Navas expertly saved the effort and his feet pushed it on to the crossbar. What a relief for PSG and this only compounds everything that was wrong with Barcelona.
There was also a goal-mouth scramble involving Messi when he was played through in the 61st minute but he couldn't get his effort into the back of the net. Marquinhos did brilliantly well to save it at Messi's feet. Barcelona also had another effort saved by Navas in the 69th minute when a header was flicked in from the corner kick. PSG played with determination never to have a repeat of what happened in previous seasons against Barcelona.
Mbappe could have won it for his side on the night when he was played through. He ran the length of the field with Icardi just waiting beside him. He went for power instead of placement and he blasted his effort over the bar, shockingly, in the 90th minute.
PSG got the job done and joined Dortmund, (who qualified at the expense of Sevilla), Porto (who qualified at the expense of Juventus) and Liverpool (who qualified at the expense of RB Leipzig). We await the second leg ties between:
Real Madrid v Atalanta (Madrid with 1-0 advantage)
Manchester City v Monchengladbach (City with 2-0 advantage)
Bayer Munich v Lazio (Bayern with 4-1 advantage)
Chelsea v Atletico Madrid (Chelsea with 1-0 advantage)
