What a game this was for Manchester United. They ended the year with a win and now, they started the year with another win. Who better to win for a confidence boost than Aston Villa?
Villa have been in fine form and I knew it would take extra effort for United to get a win or anything out of this game and that is exactly what happened.
As expected, United dominated proceedings early on and got the best chances. It was an attacking game from both sides and the kind of game that would keep you at the edge of your seat.
The first goal from United came from beautiful interplays which started from a dazzling overhead ball from pogba which a nod followed, to Rashford's flick, to Aaron Wan Bissaka's darting run and a cross to Martial who expertly buried it.
I must say that the two goalkeepers were on form that night. They expertly saved countless of attacking balls and kept both their teams in the game. It was a lovely match and kudos to the two of them.
Villa levelled back when they played a quick freekick into the path of Jack Grealish, who cut inside and crossed into the path of Traore, who brilliantly slotted the ball into the net.
Pogba, Fernandes, Bailly and De Gea produced a top-class performance on the night and they turned up when it was really expected.
Pogba won a penalty when he was tussled down in the box. The ref pointed to the spot while the VAR validated the claim too. Fernandes stepped up and dispatched the penalty to give United the lead again.
Villa threw all the had to and make it a nervy ending with United hanging on to the lead. Both teams had brilliant chances but for the two outstanding goalkeepers, it could have been more.
United is now level on points with Liverpool.
