Liverpool hoped to start 3 points clear on the log with a win against Southampton but they got a reality check instead.
In a match that was totally dominated by Liverpool on all fronts, still, they couldn't deliver the goods as their major players forgot to show up with their shooting boots.
Southampton handed Liverpool their first loss in the new year which is the second loss of the season for Liverpool as well.
Danny Ings came back to haunt his former employer when he expertly pounced and looped the ball into the unguarded net in just 1 minute 51 seconds into the match. Liverpool tried to look for answers but got none in the entirety of the match. With United having a game in hand over Burnley, you can imagine United at the top of the summit with 3 points clear if they win.
Mane missed a good chance in the 40th minute which was the major theme for Liverpool on the night as Salah also missed another brilliant chance in the 47th minute.
Liverpool dominated 90% of the possession early in the second half but it came to nothing. A disappointing game that ended with Liverpool having just one shot on target. You can imagine the disappointment they would feel after the match. Looked like their star players didn't turn up on the night and Mane missed many chances in the match too, even till the 93rd minute when he headed over the bar.
That was Southampton's first win in 8 years against Liverpool and you can see what it means to their coach when he was all emotional with tears when the final whistle was blown.
Southampton is now in 6th position and Liverpool would hope that Burnley thwarts United's chances too.
