What Is Ho'oponopono? | The Hawaiian Healing Technique
I write fitness articles almost every day, and I have been asked on more than one occasion what was the ho'oponopono session that I speak about. So, here's a brief explanation of the healing technique that originated from Hawaii but is making unimaginable healing in practitioners.
Since I practice energy and healing techniques like the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Meditation, and few others, I also read a lot about them. While doing one of the readings, I came across Ho'oponopono and was quite fascinated by it. It seemed to bring together a lot of common threads in healing. What do I mean?
In healing, we try to accomplish three distinct parts. One is letting go of our old hurts and emotions and relieving our mind and body of the past. This part is focused on the self. The second part is allowing where we are grateful for what we have, and in doing so, we attract more of it. This part connects the self with God (or Universe or Soul) and is a concept that comes forth from the Law of Attraction. The third and the last part is our allowing the healing of others. This is theoretically speaking absurd because we cannot heal others without giving medical attention. But spiritually speaking, it is understood that we are multiple bodies with one Soul. And therefore, our sending love and healing can cause someone outside of our body to recover. We will touch upon this part briefly in a moment. This third part is beyond the self or outside the self.
Why are we discussing these three parts? Well, so far in my study of these three parts, I have realized that each piece has its own healing technique with apparent overlaps; for example, EFT for self, NLP for self and allowing, and so on. While these work well, I haven't come across an energy healing technique combining all three. That was until I came across Ho'oponopono.
I came across Ho'oponopono for the first time in one of the talks of Dr. Joe Vitale. It wasn't so much about Ho'oponopono but its result which intrigued me. The story goes something like this. One of the doctors tending to patients in a criminal mental asylum did something miraculous. Criminal mental asylum is for mentally unstable patients who could (or had) grievously injure somebody if not kill them. So, this doctor went through the files of the patients and started using Ho'oponopono on them. The effects were on the borders of insanity, to believe.
All of the patients, one by one, started to calm down and heal. All the traits and behaviors of a normal person began to re-emerge. This continued until they were discharged from the mental asylum, and no one was left. Now, when I heard this story, I had to try out Ho'oponopono. Can you imagine doing something on yourself that heals others?
Here is a one-minute video of Dr. Joe Vitale touching upon Ho'oponopono.
See that? You change, and you change it for everyone. Now, if you go back to the previous section, you will notice that Ho'oponopono, when practiced, is in itself enough to tackle the three areas that I spoke about - self, allowing, and others. One energy exercise for everything.
I couldn't bask in the glory of knowing the process. I had to try it out. And that's what I did. It is indeed remarkable, and I use it almost every day.
As outlined at the beginning of the article, the process is as simple as stating those four sentences. Here is how it is applied.
When faced with painful emotions, identify the feeling or the situation. For example, if I feel anxious while going on stage, this is all I have to say.
I am sorry that I am anxious going on stage
Forgive me for the anxiety
I love you
Now, remember, you are not addressing it to anyone in particular. This is what you say and feel. Now, the thing is, the more you can be specific about your unhappy feeling, the better it works. So, let's say in the above example, you know your anxiety is because of a fall you had on the stage in the past, then you can say the following.
I am sorry that I am feeling anxious that I could fall on stage
Forgive me for this anxiety
I love you
It works. It works like a charm, and I can vouch for it. Imagine, in doing the energy exercise, I am not only relieving myself but others in a similar situation. See the enormity of the process?
As a corollary to the above point, what you witness is also caused by you. For example, if you see a beggar on the road, you ought to know that your scarcity thoughts have resulted in what you see - the beggar in this case. I know it is a lot to ask of us to be responsible for everything that happens, but hey, this cures and heals you too. Besides, it is not about doing for everything in the world but for those aspects that you witness happening in the world. I tried Ho'oponopono in such situations, too, and it worked for me for sure, and I can only guess that it must have worked for the beggar.
Here's how I frame the words:
I am sorry, my brother, that you are living in scarcity
Forgive me, my brother
I love you
Like I said, in doing so, you are removing scarcity not only from the person begging but also from you. It is powerful, and you will see the difference.
Now, this process is quite loaded. Imagine what it shows us - that we have so much power in us that we can change the world. It is awesomeness personified.
Try using the process and see the world and yourself changing. There could be nothing more gratifying to even remotely know that you could be the reason for the world-changing, sitting right there in your room. I find it quite effective.
Also, this does not mean that you do not do the other energy exercises that you may know. I continue with Meditation which I rank number one in my energy-soul-mind pursuits. So, do them but give Ho'oponopono a chance and feel the difference.
