Why is Happiness So Important?

Happiness is not only a spiritual conduit to our abundant life, but also science has proved time and again that staying happy is staying healthy. Of course, we can relate the scientific proof to spirituality as well, but for the sake of those not believing in spirituality, let’s keep it scientific.

The argument is that when we are happy, we are aligning to God, Higher Power, Soul Energy, Super Being, Universe, or whatever connotation supports your belief of a higher power. The alignment so achieved brings us the all that we desired and asked for in our life. If it is so, which I know is so, then isn’t it obvious for us to stay happy and stay aligned?

The answer is a yes, and without doubt, more than 90% of us would have said yes. Then why are we not happy all the time?

Your Life is Conditioned!

The answer to our question is that we have been conditioned to remain anything but happy and consider happiness as a scarce resource available only for a limited time. We have been conditioned to believe that happiness is a result of conditions being fulfilled, and if they are not, then happiness does not have any meaning. The basic premise that happiness is a result and not a natural state leads to our misery. Why?

Because we don’t look for happiness but conditions that need to be fulfilled to feel happy. And that’s the beginning of never being happy or at least not being happy for the most of the time. The irony is that if we are delighted, we can get all that we want, but we go on a journey the other way round stating that I will be happy only if I get what I want. Hmm. See the problem?

Let’s Become Part of the Solution

Okay, now we know the problem, but what is the solution? Well, there is one solution which is equivalent to hard-wiring your brain to come back to the happiness state whenever you deviate from it.

The idea has been around for long in India’s yogic past (read about mudras), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) of the most recent occurrence or even staying positive studies. The underlying premise is that happiness need not be experienced physically alone but can be imagined too. The brain does not know the difference between joy being experienced, like when you get that job promotion or stood first in class from imagining the happy moment. The brain works the same way in both cases.

You would know this already as you would catch your self smiling or being happy when you think of a moment from the past where you did something commendable or experienced something good. Isn’t that the case? I am sure it is. Well, then, that is our solution.

Getting to know the Solution

So, the idea is to find these happy moments from the past and anchor it in such a way, that the feeling is available to us whenever we need it. Anchoring is the only new part in our discussion so far. We will see that in a moment.

The same process can be applied to multiple scenarios. You can anchor courage, achievement and even your future if you so wish. I am certain that the idea is already ringing a bell in you. So, let’s get to know the process.

Take a look at this video:

Do you see how it is done? Let me summarize the video.

1.      Find two to three scenarios where you were happy in the past

2.      Imagine that scenario and feel the happiness

3.      Anchor the happiness

4.      Test the happiness state

That’s basically it. Once you anchor the happiness, you can call for that state in any situation and at any time. How good is that?

The Best Part

In fact, this process would be the easiest to test out another hypothesis. You can check if being happy brings you all that you desire, or is it what you want brings you happiness. The chances are that with this process, you will start to see the former as the case. And when you do, make it a point to jump back to happiness if you ever feel down.

I hope this helps. So, learn the process and keep using it all the time! 😊

Remember a happy moment and become happy! It is true that a remembered or even a completely imagined state of mind causes the same biochemical changes in the central nervous system as the real emotion. That is to say, it IS a real emotion. Good article.

Yes, it is so easy to trick our minds into happiness and yet we do the exact opposite. It is a bit silly on our part to keep imagining sadness and getting it too... What a waste! :)

Thanks for stopping by @mictorrani! Glad you enjoyed the article.
