Nicolae Ceausescu was born on January 26, 1918 in the commune of Scornicesti in Olt County. He was the third member of a family to be born, with ten children and living in the village for about 100 years. "In the 1920s, an ancestor of theirs, who came from the village of Polovragi in Gorj, would have settled there. Ceausescu's name comes from the Turkish language, 'ceaus', meaning 'small servant'."
Nicolae's father, Andruta Ceausescu, had a three-hectare piece of land and a few animals. In addition to these goods, he also earns money by tailoring. From what they had in the household, the Ceausescu family would have been able to support themselves, but Ceausescu's father often spent his money on the pub in the village.
Nicolae Ceausescu's mother, Alexandra, was illiterate, but was appreciated by her neighbors as a woman "hardworking and close to those around her."
Nicolae Ceausescu had five brothers (Ilie, Ion, Florea, Marin and Nicolae-Andruta) and three sisters (Niculina, Maria and Elena).

Political career.
In November 1933 he became a member of the Communist Youth Union of Romania, a political party that was illegal at the time. He was first arrested in 1933 for communist agitation during a strike. In 1934 he was drafted into the Black District Committee where he worked until August when he was appointed to work in the anti-fascist movement. He was a member of the National Anti-Fascist Committee and the Central Committee of Anti-Fascist Youth. Three more arrests followed - for collecting signatures in support of the release of some railway workers accused of communist activity and for other similar actions, but he was immediately released.

The former dictator was sent by the leadership of the Communist Youth Union to Argeş in 1935, with the main task of recruiting as many people as possible and making pro-communist propaganda.
