The new prospective

So it has been some time since the Nothing phone has been announced and has created a hype around it.

Some are hopeful while some are skeptic and for some time the Android community has been divided on it.

But one thing everyone has to agree on is the Nothing phone is trying to do something different and bring freshness into the dull and stagnated market.

I have talked about this before, how phones have become boring and companies are just releasing similar phones after phone with the new SoC chip and less hardware feature.

The first look at the phone

Marques Brownlee has just recently got his hands on the actual device and gave us the overview impression of the device, which is releasing around 12th July

You can check the video below:

Now, Marques wasn't able to able to provide a lot of details as he wasn't allowed to (meaning there is an embargo on details)

Therefore he shows off what the company want people to focus on which is the transparent back panel and the LED lights.

And to be honest this does look good and unique and while the focus is on looks it seems that the company is focusing on utility as well.

While the adjustable LED pattern for different ringtones does looks beautiful it also shows different notifications as well.

For example the bottom LED strip can be used to display battery level while charging or full LED grid to be used as a bigger flash while taking photos and videos.

This is beautiful stuff

Hardware is still a mystery

While the glimpse that we have got are genuinely exciting, we still don't know what to expect in terms of the specifications.

  • What chip will it use?

  • What the 2 cameras are?

  • Will it have fast charging?

  • Will it support SD Card expansion?

  • Does it has a headphone jack?

There are a few rumors

  • It will have Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC chip

  • It will have a 50 megapixel primary and 8 megapixel ultrawide camera

  • It will have 4500 mAh battery and 45 W charging

But nothing is confirmed, yet.

And it seems that it will remain a mystery till the phone is actually released.

My concerns

I am really excited for this phone and may buy it if it isn't priced too crazy but I still have concerns and could halt my decision to buy this phone.

Charger in the Box

It seems the trend of not including the charger in the box with the phone as started to be perceived as a sign of premium (which is just downright stupid).

I just hope that this is not the case with this phone as I can't respect that.

And no this does not help the environment, that's just a stupid statement for dumb people to believe.

No headphone jack

Another trend that is now a days plaguing the smartphone industry is the removal of the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Which just a design to take options away from the consumers.

And honestly it does seems like Nothing phone (1) might be ditching the good ol' jack as well.

If you look at the video at 2:22 mark you'll see the phone from the bottom side.

And you'll see that there is a speaker grill, a USB-c hub and the sim tray.

No headphone jack on the bottom, where is usually is in modern phone.

Now at 0:16 mark we can see the top in a slight tilt of the hand

and again at 1:10

There doesn't seems to be a headphone jack at the top either.

Which is a bit of a let down in my opinion.

SD Card expansion support

Now this is an important thing and no matter much much variants you can come up with if it doesn't has a SD Card slot the phone is incomplete.

And I am hoping against all odds that Nothing phone (1) will have a SD Card slot.

If it doesn't then all the talk of bring freshness back into the market is just all talk and no show.

My guess is that Nothing is most likely going to remove the SD Card slot. Oh! the tragedy.

And the reason for that is again the image from the 2:22 mark where we see a bottom sim tray and generally we have seen that with that sort of a set up the tray only support 2 sims and not a SD Card.

While there are exception to this and technically you can give 2 sim slots on one side and SD Card slot on the other side of the tray, this is a very rare occurrence.

It seems that while Nothing might just focus on looks and not functionality.

The conclusion

I am still excited for this phone and it is sad that there is no headphone jack, I'll wait and see till it is launched and reviewed by people to actually buy it myself.

If there is no charger and SD Card support in the phone then the phone is useless in my honest view. And instead of buying a phone from a start up that doesn't have any track record or support history I will prefer to buy from a established company. A beautiful back panel with LED lights is not a good enough reason to switch my phone.

The company needs to provide something really different and not just the back panel panel if it really wants to claim to be different.

This is really unique and funny. Hardware is a true mystery. Nothing phone sounds like a mystery not yet believed.
