High yielding short variety hybrid coconut cultivation method in Vietnam

Coconut is one of the major cash crops in Bangladesh. It is a tree whose every organ is useful in one way or another in public life. The varieties of coconut that are in vogue in our country at present are mainly tall varieties, the yield is comparatively less, the number of fruit yields is 50-60 fruits per year and it normally takes 6 to 7 years to get the yield. Therefore, in order to get the yield of coconut as soon as possible, emphasis is being laid on the cultivation of the new ‘DJ Complete Dwarf (Short)’ variety of coconut. At the end of three years, the height of the coconut tree will be two to two and a half feet. Proper care of this new variety of coconut tree will start flowering in 2.5 to 3 years. The tree will flower three to four times a year. The yield is about three times that of our native variety. With proper care, about 200-250 coconuts can be obtained every year. A tree will live 20 to 25 years. The shorter variety of Vietnamese coconut has a relatively high water content. Generally, short varieties of coconut trees can be planted in all types of soils. Apart from that, this species can tolerate much more salinity. The trees are short and easy to care for. In the meantime, planting of this short variety of coconut tree has started in different districts of the country including Barisal, Barguna, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Khulna, Dinajpur, Kushtia and Meherpur. Besides, this species has also been planted in the hilly areas of Bandarban and Rangamati districts.

Varieties: There are two short varieties from Vietnam

(A) Siam Green Coconut: It is very popular for use as a dab. The color of this variety is somewhat green, somewhat small in size, each weighs 1.2-1.5 kg. 250 to 300 ml of drink is available in this variety of coconut. 150-200 fruits per tree per year.

(B) Siam Blue Coconut: This is also a very popular variety. It was invented in 2005. This sapling is very popular among farmers in Vietnam. The color of the fruit is yellow, each weighs 1.2-1.5 kg, the amount of water in the coconut is 250-300 ml. Coconut water is very sweet and shelf life is long, so this variety of coconut can be exported abroad. 150-200 fruits per tree per year.

Production method:

Soil: Drained loamy to sandy loamy soil. However, all types of soil are suitable for coconut cultivation. If the soil is very hard, gravelly rocky soil, fill the hole with organic manure by digging a hole about 1.5 meters wide and 1.5 meters deep and the tree will grow well.

of seedlings: Coconut seedlings should be planted in the middle of the hole in such a way that the base of the seedlings adjacent to the coconut husk is above the ground. When planting seedlings, the soil should be well pressed downwards so that the seedlings can stand firmly.

Fertilizer and Irrigation Management: Fertilizer should be applied at the following rate every 3 months after planting. Fertilizers should be applied in a 30-40 cm wide and 20 cm deep drain at a distance of 30 cm from the base of the seedlings. The next time the fertilizer should be applied 5-6 cm further from the base of the seedlings. After application of fertilizer, the roots of the tree should be wetted with 15-20 liters of water.
