"August is almost done and we are entering September, this year has been hard for some, but at least it is better than last year. I hope you all are staying safe out there and enjoy the post".
Summer anime season is already in full swing, with exciting anime like Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S and One-Punch Man director Shingo Natsume's new original series Sonny Boy.
With the absolute flow of awesome and exciting new anime pouring out this year, some amazing anime may have slipped off your radar. To that end, I am here to create a list for you of some of the best anime to add to your anime watchlist. (Let's go)
HORIMIYA
This anime adaptation was gotten from the manga "Horimiya by Daisuke Hagiwara and HERO". If you are looking for a slice of life and romance this anime is for you.
A show whose namesake comes from combining the names of its two central love interests, the story follows Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura.
Hori, a responsible big sister, an intelligent and confident student with friends, and her budding romance with her classmate Miyamura, a shy and quiet loner that seems to be an outcast, but outside school he seems to have an edgy look. (We learn he has tattoos and piercings!).
The reason this story is so unique is that it is different from other shojo manga, In other shojo manga, it’s not uncommon for a story to take entire seasons for the love interests to hold hands, and might not even show a kiss.
In Horimiya, we see them fall for each other in a matter of episodes. This pace allows the debut season of the show to quickly move away from showing just Hori and Miyamura’s relationship and gives us space to learn about all the other people in their life.
Over time, we see the once lonely Miyamura develop a loving and supportive community around him.
Horimiya doesn’t do anything remarkable or groundbreaking; It’s just really pleasant to watch. The characters shy away from intense conflict and embrace idyllic friendships that overcome conflict without a whole lot of development.
What’s more is that you really don’t have to sink all that much time into it, with a complete story starting and coming to a close after just one season. Fun and light, Horimiya was just a rephrasing summer snack of a watch for me.
JUJUTSU KAISEN
"To tell you the truth, I don't really think there is any reason to add this because I think everyone already knows this masterpiece, but let me add it".
Follow Itadori as he goes on this journey to find the right death.
Jujutsu Kaisen was the breakout anime success of 2020 and continued strongly in 2021. The story follows the young Yuji Itadori, a good-hearted schoolboy who one day eats an actual finger, which served as a vessel for a powerful demon called Sukuna.
Itadori gets taken in by the questionable, but powerful mentor Gojo Satoru who assembles a Naruto-like cast of three central characters who work together to defeat the monsters known as curses in their world.
The show starts a bit slow but pays off to those who spend just a little more time with it. The characters (especially the female characters) are presented with care, and the three main characters develop an endearing dynamic reminiscent of siblings who like to pick on each other.
Sticking around will show some of Studio Mappa’s finest work, as later fight sequences are some of the best animations to come from the studio yet.
Basically, Jujutsu Kaisen is the perfect show for long-time shonen fans who are looking for something that isn’t afraid to venture off the well-trodden paths of its predecessors and conjure up something a little bit darker, a bit stranger.
BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA (MY HERO ACADEMIA) Season 5
Boku no hero academia (My hero academia) is a Japanese superhero manga series written and illustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi.
This anime has been on everyone's radar for a few years now for its superhero adaptation and a great story.
Studio Bones’ breakout superhero action drama returned for its fifth season as the students of UA High school were thrust into ever more precarious danger with greater stakes.
My Hero Academia season 5 deals heavily with Endeavor’s recovery following his confrontation with the super-powered Nomu at the end of last season, the hero Hawks working undercover to take down the League of Villains from the inside, and Deku manifesting a new aspect of his quirk One for All as he delves deeper into the history of his predecessors and their connection to the villainous All for One.
SK8 THE INFINITY
The hard-working skateboarder Reki loves the S races — secret skateboarding races that take place at night. These races are filled with danger, and some of the most iconic underground skateboarders settle their beef (yes, that’s the term the anime uses) in S. Canadian transfer student Langa is more into snowboarding, but with the help of Reki, he starts skating and participating in S. Conflict arises as the creator of S is more devilish than he seems, and Langa begins to outperform Reki.
Sk8 is special because its characters make it special. With its large cast of great characters (Cherry stans, unite!) and interesting backstories, it’s the perfect short sports anime to satisfy any itch you may have in 12 episodes.
BEASTARS (SEASON 2)
Beastars tells the story of a wolf who wants to have sex with a rabbit, but worries he will devour said rabbit. I think it’s a metaphor for puberty. Though it could be a cringe, misguided exploration of race. Maybe it’s holding a magnifying glass to sexual violence on campus. Or perhaps it’s a coming-of-age story about a generation of young people disconnected from their parents by rapidly changing norms. Frankly, I’ve stopped caring about what it’s about.
I know this is gauche amongst critics, but for me, Beastars works when I quit trying to make a one-to-one connection between our world and its city of horny teenage carnivores and herbivores. I enjoy the show best when I take its internal logic on its own terms. In that way, Beastars is like Romeo and Juliet. A sexy, violent, and often frustrating tale of star-crossed lovers kept apart by society. And like the works of Shakespeare, Beastars can be contorted into whatever else you want it to be.
Tokyo Revengers
Tokyo Revengers is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Ken Wakui.
You can check out my other post on Tokyo revengers but let's talk more about it.
With a mixture of Time-travelling and a Gangster setting, Tokyo Revengers really stands out in the modern-day anime community.
With only one season currently airing, the show has truly changed the anime community and outselling the competition.
Tokyo revengers show us the life of Hanagaki Takemitchy, a 26 loser whose friends are killed by a local gang. When Takemichi is murdered, he winds up in his past life where he is still a 12-year-old boy. Upon returning to the present, he and his friend's brother, Naoto, discover that Takemichi can now travel through time, and hope to use the ability to save Naoto's sister. Likewise, they run afoul of local Japanese delinquent gangs, whose actions become even more violent the more Takemichi travels.
The blend of science fiction elements makes the anime just seem so unique especially for new anime followers who are just looking for a good anime to watch.
The time-traveling aspect is so well done and doesn't cause confusion or make you think so much, it's pretty basic and simple.
It's is a huge breath of fresh air within the current shonen landscape, itself starved for more grounded and realistic books.
To your Eternity
To Your Eternity is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima.
Debuting in April, with subtitled episodes hitting Crunchyroll weekly following their Japan broadcasts, and dubbed ones releasing seven weeks behind on Crunchyroll and HBO Max, To Your Eternity follows an uncommon premise: A mysterious creator sends an immortal, sentient orb to Earth where it begins mimicking what stimulates it. First taking on the form of a rock, then a wolf, and eventually a boy, the orb — who later is given the name Fushi — slowly develops a sense of identity and begins to discover what it means to live.
To Your Eternity is a wholly empathetic story that balances the thrills of a magical adventure with a transcendent coming-of-age story about what it means to live in a world defined equally by tender dreams and callous realities. With its poetic storytelling, humanist themes, and mesmerizing animation, To Your Eternity touches upon all the elements that make the Studio Ghibli films so compelling while delivering an inventive, original narrative that will utterly sweep you away. So take Fushi’s lead and give yourself over to all the emotional highs and lows of this enchanting new world.
World Trigger
World Trigger, also known in short form as WorTri, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Daisuke Ashihara.
World Trigger is finally continuing the beloved anime series' story after season two, with the third season finally premiering this Fall.
World Trigger is based on the manga by Daisuke Ashihara and follows high school student Osamu Mikumo living a double life as an agent of Border, an organization protecting Japan from aliens known as Neighbors. When Osamu befriends powerful humanoid "neighbor" Yuma Kuga, he forms a border agent squad with Yuma as well as 13-year-old sniper Chika, whom Osamu is sworn to protect. In addition to protecting their city from Neighbor invasions, the squad vies to quickly increase their rank in hopes of earning distinctions high enough to be eligible for away missions to the Neighbors' world.
BLEACH
Bleach is a Japanese anime television series based on Tite Kubo manga of the same name.
Bleach is back! That’s all we need to say for this one. Since the anime’s end in 2012, we finally have news of a continuation to round out the manga’s last arc, The Thousand-Year Blood War. We don’t have much information on the exact release yet, but here’s hoping the 2021 release window sticks to help celebrate Bleach’s 20th anniversary.
