In the Falcón State, Venezuela is the Morrocoy National Park, northeast of the Golfo Triste, on the central western coast of Venezuela. Declared a National Park on May 26, 1974.
It covers both terrestrial and aquatic areas of the Golfo Triste, has a large number of mangroves and among its main tourist attractions are a large number of islets or keys, among them are Cayo Sombrero, Cayo Borracho, Cayo Sal, Cayo Las Ánimas, Cayo Peraza, with beaches. of white sands and crystalline waters that are a visual delight such as Playa Mero, Paiclás, Punta Brava, Mayorquina, Payuela, Payuelita, Boca Seca, Playa Muerto among others.
At 250 meters above sea level in the continental part, El Cerro Morroco stands out and its maximum elevation between the set of inlets and mangroves.
Approximately 266 species of birds coexist in Morrocoy National Park, where there is also the Cuare Wildlife Refuge. Among the birds in the park, the osprey, the flamingo, the pelican or gannet, the paddle heron, the cotua, the white heron, the helmeted parrot, the royal parrot, the corocoro, the white-breasted heron and the frigate or sea earwig stand out.
Morrocoy National Park is also home to numerous marine reptiles such as sea turtles, among which the green turtle, the hawksbill turtle, the cardón turtle, the loggerhead turtle, all in danger of extinction, as well as the coastal alligator stand out.
Among the marine mammals that inhabit the park are dolphins and calves, which use the park as a refuge. Among the terrestrial mammals, the caramerudo deer, the matacán deer, the honey bear, the araguato monkey, the limpet, the picure, the sloth, the yellowtail, the crab-eating fox and the cinchado baquiro stand out, which are basically located in the Chichiriviche hill.
Of course, fish are also part of the fauna found in the park, including grouper, curvina, picúa, black cachama, tarpon, snook, dogfish, sardine, horse mackerel, snapper and corocoro, as well as other fish that inhabit coral reefs.
Mollusks and crustaceans are also guests of the park, among them the mangrove oyster, sea hares, quigua, blue and red crabs, crabs and lobster, of which there are two types; Panalirus argus and Panalirus grettatus. There are also a wide variety of insects.
