Lalmai Hills is an isolated mountain range located in Lalmai Upazila, Comilla District, Bangladesh . It is estimated that these mountains were formed in the Pleistocene about 25 million years ago . As such, it is contemporary with the Barind lands of Bangladesh and Madhupur and Bhawal Garh . The length of Lalmai hill is 8 km and its widest part is 4.6 km. Its maximum height is 48 meters. The northern part of the hill is known as Mainamati hill and the southern part as Lalmai hill.
The soil of Lalmai hill is red in color. Due to which it is called Lalmai hill.
There is a story about the Lalmai hills of Comilla. When the battle between Rama and Ravana was fought, when Rama's younger brother Lakshman was seriously injured, the doctor instructed him to apply the juice of the leaves of the Vaishalyakarani tree on the wound. According to Vaidya, the symptoms will get better if the juice of Vaishalyakarani leaves is applied. And so Hanuman set out for the Himalayas to fetch the Vaishalyakarani tree . However, Hanuman did not recognize the Vaishalyakarani tree and brought up the entire Himalayan mountain including the tree. When the treatment was over, Hanuman left to keep the mountain in its proper place. But on the way, some part of the mountain later goes to Comilla's Lamlam Sagar. Since then, the place has been known as Lalmai.
It is also said that one king had two daughters. One daughter's name is Lalmati and the other daughter's name is Mainamati. The Lalmai and Mainamati hills are named after them.
At present, due to lack of proper maintenance and supervision, this tradition is on the verge of destruction. Unscrupulous land grabbers are cutting the soil of this hill and selling it elsewhere. Also, cultivable land is being made by cutting the soil.
