My Review of Nioh 2, The Tengu’s Disciple

1 40

The Tengu's Disciple package takes us nearly 400 years back to the end of the Heian era. When our character touches an old flute he finds on the altar, he finds himself on a large battlefield. We meet one of the most famous warriors of the period, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and his assistant, warrior priest Benkei, and try to learn the bond between them and our character.

Pros

+ New story based on a different period

+ More gameplay time with Dream of the Demon mode

+ New boss fights are very enjoyable

+ New weapons, techniques and equipment

+ What's new in character customization

Cons

- There are only 2 story missions

- The story part is short

- Recurring enemies still annoyance

The DLC pack adds ten new missions, two of which contain the main quest stories. The remaining eight include side missions and boss fights that we might want to repeat. In order to enter the first DLC mission named "A Song to Calm the Storm", we must have completed the main story of Nioh 2. Also, the recommended minimum level for missions is 120, so it wouldn't be wise if it were possible to enter the story directly.

Although it was a bit disappointing to have only two story missions in the game, I can say that they did a successful job in terms of content. In the first mission that starts on the shore, we move through the ruins of the ship stranded and meet the warrior priest Benkei, then join Yoshitsune, who wears the same sword as us. Fast forward to history after the first mission, the game takes our character back to a time when Yoshitsune was betrayed and attacked by his refugees. In the mission, which started in the bamboo forests, we try to go to the temple where Yoshitsune took refuge through the passageways in the mines.

There are many regions to spend time in the newly added sections. The maps that come with both main and side missions are very well designed. Although it is possible to cut enemies quickly and fight the last enemy of the episode for those who do not want to linger too much on the map, it is possible to spend a long time even on a single map, when it comes to shortcuts to open, hidden kodals and items to collect.

Game Type

Action, Hack'n Slash, Role Playing Game

I have a point about partitions, but I'm not sure if that is a minus. While I was playing some of the episodes, I had the thought that "Nioh 1 had this episode". In the first episode between ships, I wondered if it takes place in the same place as in the first game, while traveling through the mines and even during a boss arena. Even if it is not exactly the same, there are similar things, although it is not possible for me to write the minuses.

Nioh 2 offered 9 different melee weapons for our samurai to use. A new one is added among these weapons, each of which offers a different combat experience. For the Splitstaff, our new weapon that comes with The Tengu's Disciple.

Warrior Need New Weapon

Splitstaff, which looks like a normal stick, allows us to attack the enemy with its two detachable ends. At first glance, the weapon reminds me of Lunar Staff, which I met with Ninja Gaiden 2, which is also a Team Ninja game, and does a successful job of pushing back the enemies by swinging it around like a nunchal when its ends are split. The only problem I had in my mind about this weapon was that it was under the category of "magic". The warrior priests may have made this decision because they were magic-based and preferred this weapon. Otherwise there is nothing magical about Splitstaff. It is very enjoyable to use and I definitely suggest you give it a chance.

Will there be new weapons and not new enemies? Almost all of the enemies of Nioh 2 are demons from Japanese mythology. Perhaps one of the most complained aspects of Nioh 2 was that it did not have many different types of enemies in order not to get out of this concept. There is a similar situation in The Tengu's Disciple.

While fighting with new enemies in three of the 4 boss fights that come with the DLC, a more advanced version of an enemy from the first game awaits us in the side mission. Among the enemies we encounter in the episodes, the crabs carrying the face of the transforming person and that we can only damage from the weak point and the skin pile yokai named Nuppeppo, which will not go out of your mind once you see it, are added. We continue to encounter evolved versions of the enemies we encounter in Nioh 2 and the "gaki" type yokai, the most annoying enemy of the game.

Other Innovations

You've finished both the Nioh 2 and the DLC pack, and you've even completed the NG + mode, Dream of the Strong. Then it's time to step into the Dream of the Demon mode that comes with the additional package. Dream of the Demon, which we can consider as the NG ++ mode, offers a different game experience with stronger enemies, stronger equipment and changing enemy order. Make sure you are ready for the challenge though. For the first mission of the game, the minimum recommended level in NG ++ mode is 250. In addition, with this mod, the maximum level limit of the character has increased to 400.

Although released with the DLC, another mode that anyone can play with the free update is the Demon Parade Picture Scroll. When playing in NG + and NG ++ mode, scrolls that may fall from enemies allow a new quest to be opened on the map screen. When we manage to complete these tasks, the scrolls become items that our character can use.

Result

While the DLC pack doesn't seem to offer much with one new weapon, a few new ninja and magic techniques, 10 missions and 3 new bosses, it adds at least 10 hours of new content to the game. Considering Dream of the Demon and Demon Parade modes that come for free, we can say that it is a very full package. Considering that Team Ninja will release 3 DLC packs for this game and bring more content, as Nioh did, it would make more sense to buy the Nioh 2 Season Pass instead of buying The Tengu's Disciple alone. Thus, you can also get the chance to see the whole story started by the first DLC.
