Getting Started on Hive - My Tips

I am often asked for tips on how to get started and build traction on Hive. I have been on Hive for around 5 months now and I thought I would share some of what I have learned so far and things that I wish I knew and applied earlier. This then could help you to be successful and gain faster traction with Hive.

Invest some money in Hive and power up

In my first 6 weeks, I don't think I purchased hive or powered up at all. I just relied on the organic growth of my hive power. This is ok if you are just testing the system and getting a feel for things. Also in my case trying to figure out how to actually get fiat money converted into hive as it is not available on many exchanges.

But if you are serious about using hive and growing your activities here, whether it be a business, a hobby or just to have some fun and earn some crypto, I would recommend spending some fiat and growing your account. Not only does it give you more power to do basic activities, it allows you to increase your interaction with others, such as leaving more comments and upvoting.

This will help you start earning more Hive faster and easier than if you have a low account value because low votes turn to dust and you don't earn on them.

There are many other good reasons to power up. The first is that growing and compounding crypto returns from 0 is harder and takes a much longer time to grow. This could be demotivating to see how long it may take.

Also, you could be short of funds to actually fully explore and test the opportunities available on Hive, such as the layer 2 tokens which support communities and play2earn games on Hive. This would set back your learning curve by weeks or months. In the beginning, we are all focused on learning the system, not earning, which comes later.

I would recommend powering up even just a small amount regularly such as €5 or €10 at an interval that suits you and your budget. This will help you twofold. It will improve your knowledge of working with cryptos, buying and selling on the exchanges etc if you are totally new to crypto.

The other main benefit is that it will show other users that you are here for longer the long term and are committed to Hive. Why would existing users want to support you if you are just here to take as much as you can and leave?

A favourite banner I've seen is: "I came for the crypto but stayed for the community." In my opinion, Hive is all about community and building friendships and networking. Therefore powering up a little each week/month shows some commitment and helps the blockchain grow.

Find some communities

My second tip would be to search out some communities that you enjoy and match your passions or interests and start producing one article a day. Perhaps you like finance or movies. There is a community for many subjects. LeoFinance.io is a large finance community active on Hive. Cinetv.blog is for all things TV and movies. You can find something you like.

One other thing I wanted to say about communities is, that I use Hive because I enjoy it and am having fun. If you feel that you are not a content producer, then this is ok. It is better to focus on things that you have an interest or passion in, as you are more likely to stick it out. It won't be like work or a chore if you are forcing yourself to do something.

Perhaps you are more a gamer and want to do play2earn, then this could be a good focus.  Perhaps you want to make videos, this could also be a good focus, but both of these are still possible on Hive.

I can also recommend the We Are Alive Tribe, they are a great community that has helped me onboard to Hive and are a very supportive group with many daily post ideas and activities to take part in. You can even earn ALIVE tokens in addition to your hive rewards. 😀

Engagement and Curation

Another activity that I can't recommend enough is to spend some time engaging with others in the community. You can curate their content and leave comments. When curating - see what is successful and what isn’t. By engaging with others you are getting your name about and starting to build your network.

ListNerds

My next tip would be to recommend using my link and signing up for ListNerds. Even if you start with the free account at the beginning, it is a great way to find new content from active members and meet people who are striving and successful on Hive.

You will start to get the chance to engage with many different communities that you otherwise may not see and get more opportunities to network and find some niche or area that may be of interest to you. All the while you can learn how the different communities are working and engage with other active members on the content and competitions that are available.

The other great reason is that you also earn crypto for using ListNerds!! You can increase your earnings by sending your own emails as well as getting more exposure!

Change and Backup your keys

My final tip would be to make sure that you soon after creating your account, change your keys and back them up safely. Unlike web2.0, YOU own your account and therefore you need to look after it and make sure things stay secure. I will do a more detailed post on this in the future, so stay tuned.

I hope these tips might be useful and help you to get started or try and gain traction. If you have any other tips, please leave them in the comments and we can use those too!

Thanks for reading.
