When we hear the word 'win', what usually comes in our mind is success—bagging a trophy in a contest, getting promoted at work, or having a medal from a quiz bee. People often think that these kind of wins deserve to be celebrated, well yes, they really deserve to be acknowledged. And because of that, we overlook the small things. We only notice the big ones, that directly give an impact to our lives. But how these small wins affect us? Do they really affect us?
Winning moments are not always we can brag. Mostly, it is just the simple things that give us peace. Those kind of wins are so underrated, to the point that people do not honestly appreciate it.
For instance, you are currently on a strict diet. Losing weight is hard, indeed. So if you are able to lose at least 5 pounds a week, be proud, still. Even though you struggle in mathematics but you get a score of 5/10, be grateful for your hardwork, still. Be proud of yourself when you get to save a dollar for your savings— that is a small win too. All of us might be frustrated of things, but these small steps make us all continue. Slow progress is still a progress. No matter how it consumes our time, we should not be pressured. To relate it more, our current situation now— we are facing a pandemic. We are currently having a battle against the deadly virus that we cannot see. Being safe and sane in your home is already a blessing. Not having a contact with those affected is a thing we should be thankful for.
Without these small wins, we are not able to appreciate the big ones. Try to realize, they complete our day. They motivate us to aim for bigger steps. Some success do not involve money, awards or titles. I remember when I was in grade school, I always join big contests. I competed with different students from other schools within our city. I've became use to it— always aiming for perfection. I do not commend myself if I place only in the 2nd spot, because I wanted to be the number one all of the time. But I got tired of it. It was just a habit that did not satisfy me anymore. I felt like yes, I bagged an award, but for whom? For what? Am I really happy with these?
Since then, I learned to appreciate the little things. When I go home and my family's complete, that is also a win in life. Not all are blessed to have their family together. I also celebrate the food that we eat, because a lot of people are dying of hunger every single day. My mother would always remind me these things. I am lucky enough to have parents that provides our emotional and physical needs— I am much grateful for that as well, because many are raising themselves without the support of their parents.
Failures are part of the journey. There is no other words to sugarcoat it. We get down sometimes, or we barely get the fortune. But what I want to pinpoint is it is a matter of perspective too. There is a saying, life is like a wheel. And it really is. We cannot foresee what lies ahead us— are we going to have a not so good day today? But no matter how we wish to avoid it, we cannot. We are destined to face many hardships that may change how we see things. But we should not always lose the heart full of gratefulness and thankfulness.
Takeaways
If we focus on being grateful despite the negative things that coming around, we are the winner. The real essence of winning is at heart, whatever will happen, our faith needs to be firm enough.
