Beautiful stain glasses of St. Mary Church, Sigtuna, Sweden
Autumn leaves and stain glassIt's getting a little colder, the leaves are changing colors, and this means I have to go to Sigtuna! I decided to visit Sigtuna for the first time in a while. Sigtuna is an ancient town about an hour north of Stockholm by train.Sigtuna is said to be the town of the Vikings who moved from the town of Birka and built it in the late Viking Age, and was ruled by the first Swedish king to be baptized as a Christian (Olof Skötkonung).I don't do much church sightseeing, but I went to St. Mary's Church in Sigtuna for the first time for sightseeing. I know it is not a good idea to take a lot of pictures in a religious institution, but the stained glass windows were so beautiful that I took some pictures. Well, sorry! 😅 Stained glass was used to make it easier for people to understand in an era when people could not read or write, but I felt that even today, its beauty and its religious beliefs can be understood.St. Mary Church, Sitguna, SwedenSt. Mary's Church is the oldest building in Sigtuna that is still in use. It holds memories and treasures from the history of the town and its inhabitants for more than 750 years. It, or rather the choir and the associated cloister, were consecrated on 15 August (Virgin Mary's Ascension Day) 1247/48 and in the mid 1250s the longhouse was also completed. This was the first time that the technique of burning bricks had been used in what was then Sweden. The chancel has Romanesque features, while the nave shows the beginnings of a Gothic style, known as Mälardals Gothic. At the end of the 13th century, King Magnus Ladulås paid for the vaulting of the nave and a copper roof. In terms of walls, columns and roof, the church has largely retained the appearance it once had. - Mariakyrkan - Maria Church, Sigtuna, Sweden
