If the Earth were left without oxygen for only five seconds, during that time the planet would be hit by major negative changes, environmentalists warn.

As part of the global action for environmental protection, environmentalists note that the atmosphere contains 21% of oxygen, which is its most important ingredient. Without oxygen, there would be no humans, plants or animals.

In those five seconds without oxygen, the planet would experience great changes.

Without this basic living element, all buildings made of concrete, in which oxygen is the basic binder, would turn to dust. Metal constructions would also be a problem, because the layer of oxygen that prevents metals from melting with each other would disappear.

People would become exposed to direct solar radiation, since the ozone layer consists of oxygen atoms. Dangerous burns would occur, but the inner ear would also crack due to a sudden change in air pressure.

A sudden lack of oxygen would give people the impression that they were suddenly 2,000 meters under water.

Without oxygen, the engines in the vehicles would not work, so millions of cars would stop, while the planes would start falling to the ground. The sky would turn black, given that sunlight bounced off various particles in the atmosphere before it reached Earth.

At the same time, the Earth's crust, which consists of 45 percent oxygen, would disintegrate, environmentalists say.
