This week’s battle mage secrets focuses on the Target Practice Ruleset.

Ruleset Details

The Target Practice ruleset grants all range and magic monsters the Snipe ability. The first step in approaching this ruleset is to focus your strategy on minimizing incoming damage and maximizing offensive damage. The first two positions in your line-up should be occupied by a melee tank and a support melee monster with the Reach ability. These two spots in the line-up will provide protection to the backline and absorb damage, giving the backline a chance to do damage. Another ability that becomes key in this ruleset is the Blast ability. The OG Yodin Zaku provides all friendly monsters the Blast ability, as this ability will allow monsters to attack the enemy backline and potentially extend damage to three enemy monsters. A lot of what we have spoken about will prioritize maximizing offensive damage and want to focus on minimizing incoming damage using abilities like Return Fire or Magic Reflect. Magic Reflect bypasses armor, offering a good defence against magic blast attacks. Finally, utilizing fast monsters and multiple speed buffs still applies in this ruleset.

Battle Details

  • Mana Cap: 35

  • Ruleset(s): Target Practice

Line-up Details

  • Alric Stormbringer (summoner): +1 magic damage to all friendly monsters.

  • The Kraken: DPS melee tank.

  • Ruler of the Seas: support magic damage + speed buffs

  • Mermaid Healer + Venari Wavesmith + Pirate Captain + Crustacean King: armor, health and melee damage buffs all with the focus on helping The Kraken survive and do more damage.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

Is there a better sight than seeing the Kraken with fifteen health and five armor? The Kraken epitomizes the trope of having a beefy tank monster leading the frontline. Coupled with the Enrage ability, when it gets hit, its melee increases to eight (!!!) damage and five speed. The rest of the backline was focused on speed, health, armor, and healing buffs with the focus on keeping The Kraken alive so it can do all the damage with the Ruler of the Seas providing a very respectable four magic damage. The opposition did not stand much change especially its monster is being hit with eight melee damage by the Kraken. A super satisfying victory!

Do You Like the Target Practice Ruleset? Why or Why Not?

The Target Practice ruleset is the type of ruleset that offers that randomness in strategy and approach that keeps things fresh. Some players will prioritize minimizing incoming damage, others will prioritize offensive damage and the lucky few with large collections will do both. Whenever I am allowed to use a tank and Reach ability monster as the front-line combo, then I am golden. Reach ability has always been one of my favorite abilities in splinterlands. However, I do roll my eyes when I come up against Yodin Zaku in this ruleset as I know I will be in for a tough time due to the Blast ability and I am also salty that I sold Yodin for peanuts back in the day when I started playing and didn’t realize how OP it was!
